'Mehengi padi Congress' proves costly for BJP

Wednesday, December 17, 2008

The BJP's punch line, 'Mehengi padi Congress', on Monday boomeranged as a punch on the party which presented a poor show in the Delhi polls reminding its leaders of the experience of 2004 general elections when its 'India Signing campaign' had yielded similar results.

The saffron party put out advertisements across the capital, giving slogans, 'Mehengi Padi Congress' (Congress rule proved costly). Probably, nobody ever thought that the Congress would again come to power for the third consecutive term. The party had severely criticised the Congress for its "mis-deeds" also.

"But the party did not have much to offer on developmental issues. 'Mehengi Padi Congress' slogan cannot fetch you vote. You have to say what alternative you have," said Ravi Tiwari, a commonman.  On the contrary, the Congress' campaign was based on the issue of progress and development. The party had appealed the citizens not to "stop the development of the city".

"Their campaign was a hollow exercise that is why it boomeranged on them," DPCC President J P Agrawal told PTI.  The Congress on Monday retained power in the 70-member Assembly by winning 42 seats in a keenly fought electoral battle. Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and all six of her cabinet colleagues were among the successful candidates of the Congress.  The BJP, which was expecting to topple the Congress government, found itself on the backfoot as its candidates could win in 23 seats.
