30th Anniversary Of Sony Walkman

Saturday, July 04, 2009

Sony, the most famous brand in electronics, began a revolution in portable music with the launch of the walkman before 30 years. Before this no music lovers were able to carry around their favorite tunes with them so easily and from that time the portable market has been developing and reinventing itself.

In 1979, the original blue-and-silver Walkman was marketed as the Walkman in Japan, the Soundabout in many other countries including the US, Freestyle in Sweden and the Stowaway in the UK.

On 1st July in every five years Sony would come out with a new cassette model with new features and technology until 1999. The Discman was launched in 1984 and for years the Discman with Walkman ruled the market unless and until hard drive-based and flash-based digital audio players made an appearance.

Sony's NW-MS70D portable player got overshadowed in 2003 by the iPod. The 256 MB spaced Sony player costs same as a 15 GB iPod. Very soon Sony churned out hard drive and flash based MP3 players and after a huge loss of the market shares to other companies finally, Sony tried to revive the Walkman brand through music-centric mobile phones marketed under the Sony Ericsson brand.

Nobutoshi Kihara, audio division engineer built the device in 1978 for Sony co-chairman Morita, who wanted to be able to listen to operas during his frequent transpacific plane trips.
