All-New Tata Sierra SUV Is Coming In An All-Electric Form

Indigenous car maker Tata Motors has already informed us about its plans to launch 10 electric vehicles in the country in the next five years. The company is creating a more powerful version of the Tata Nexon EV, which will be linked to the Tata Altroz EV.

Apart from this, Tata Motors is also reportedly working on a brand new Nexon-based mid-size coupe. The car will be available with an electric powertrain as well as internal combustion engines.

A recent report by Autocar India claims that Tata Motors will reintroduce the prestigious Tata Sierra nameplate in the country. Tata Motors introduced the concept version of the SUV at the Auto Expo 2020.

The highlight of this car is that it will be the first stand-alone EV-only model from Tata Motors and the first to be based on the “Born Electric” platform. The prestigious Tata Sierra was the first SUV from a domestic passenger vehicle manufacturing company.

It came with a unique 3-door design, and the SUV had a long non-opening rear window. It was a car based on a ladder-on-frame chassis and used a 2.0-litre diesel engine with an alternative 4-wheel-drive system. The upcoming Tata Sierra will not be introduced with petrol and diesel engine options.

It is going to be a fully electric car and will be developed as an EV. The production version of the Tata Sierra Electric Vehicle will have a traditional 5-door layout. According to the information, the new Sierra will be based on the dedicated Sigma Platform, which is based on the ALFA platform.

Tata engineers will have to re-engineer the platform around the battery pack to customise the packaging of this car. The amendments will also include the removal of transmission tunnels, and modification of the fuel tank area and side elements. The new Sigma platform will be lighter, more efficient, and more spacious.

Media reports claim that the development of the Tata Sierra has already started, though it will not be launched before 2025. Most of Tata’s electric cars will be based on the existing internal combustion engine platform before the Tata Sierra. Along with electric cars, Tata Motors is also working on other alternatives, affordable fuels such as CNG versions.
