Bajaj-KTM Electric Mopeds Reportedly in the Making

According to the latest reports, Bajaj and KTM will join hands in the production of electric mopeds in the Indian market. The joint production setup will also churn out several new lightweight two-wheelers for the domestic markets as well as for international trades.

In addition to this, the electric motors to be used by the brand in the production of the mopeds are expected to be of lower capacity as the development of the e-scooters as well as e-bicycles is also on the list.

The production of the electric mopeds from Bajaj and KTM is expected to start from 2022 at the Bajaj’s Chakan Plant in Pune though there has been no official confirmation on when the two-wheelers will be available in the Indian markets.

The development project for Powered Two Wheeler (PTW) electric vehicles was started by Bajaj and Pierer Mobility Group back in the FY2020. The e-mopeds that will be made under both the brand names will feature a power range between 3kW and 10kW while featuring a low voltage range of 48 Volts.

The brands are expected to use a modernised approach for the design of the upcoming e-products which includes the likes of mopeds, scooters as well as e-bicycles. The moped market is one of the most sought-after markets for the lower-income households thus leading to maximum sales of the upcoming products offering reliable performance.

At present, TVS Motor is the only company in India to manufacture mopeds powered by a 100cc engine while the moped segment accounts for around 65,000 units in sales in a single month.
