Indian motorcycle industry just has a small share of cruisers within it. Brands like Bajaj Auto and Royal Enfield are the only old and reliable names in this typical segment of motorcycling.
When on a strict budget, Bajaj offers a wide range of Cruisers which are basically the same but carries different identities based on their engine size and styling. Bajaj offers the Avenger series in Street and Cruise variants while the engines on offer include 150cc and 220cc DTS-i motors. Here are the Pros and Cons for the popular Bajaj Avenger series.
New Bajaj Avenger Series – List of Pros & Cons
Advantages of Bajaj Avenger (Pros)
# Powerful Engine
The 220cc DTS-i motor on both the 220 Cruise and 220 Street produces 19.03 PS of max power and 17.5 Nm of torque. It comes mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. This makes it the most powerful cruiser option in India when considered under INR 1 lakh. Not just that, Avenger can even be bought in a lesser powerful 150cc Street variant, which has maximum power and maximum torque of 14.54 PS and 12.5 Nm respectively.
# Economical Performance
The 150cc Street produces 14.54 PS of power and 12.5 Nm of torque. This engine returns 45-50 kmpl of excellent mileage, providing the worth of the catchy design with an economical engine. It is even priced considerably lower, even after using maximum number of same components with the 220cc Avenger. So, if you can planning to buy an economical street cruiser, then Avenger 150 has been made for you.
# Impressive Pricing
The Avenger 150 Street and 220 Street/Cruise retails for INR 76,989 and INR 87,331 respectively. This makes the cruiser section available to virtually everyone around the country. Instead of going for those high seated, speed loving performance bikes, one can opt for a simple yet attractive low slung option. The use of same engine promises equally inspiring performance from the Avenger series.
# Low Seat Height
The low seat height of 725mm on the Avenger series makes it the best option for those who are new to bikes or have an average height. It becomes easy to control as both the feet can properly touch the ground. This also helps new riders to move easily through traffic. The rear backrest makes it even more comfortable for the pillion.
# Accessory Options
Avenger series offers loads of accessories for the riders to make their everyday driving even more comfortable. The huge windshield seen on the Cruise series can even be fitted on the Street series while the same can be done to the full backrest also. The option of loading saddle bags is also available on the Avenger series. You can check out the full list of accessories from your nearest Bajaj store.
# Powerful Headlamp
If the motorcycle is to be used for touring purposes, a powerful headlamp is the need of time. Bajaj offers 55/60W bulb for better illumination, making the Avenger series more friendly on even unknown dark roads. Not just that, it even offers a better 9Ah maintenance free battery on the 220 series.
# High Ground Clearance
The Avenger series offers 169 mm of ground clearance, making it much better than many other mass market bikes of India. The lower seat height and high clearance makes it look quiet thin when seen from the side angle. However, both the properties are not seen in any other bike in India together.
Disadvantages of Bajaj Avenger (Cons)
# Power Delivery at Higher RPM
The good amount of power is delivered at quite high rpm when compared to typical cruisers around the world. The same amount of power if could have been provided around 5000 rpm, the cruising would become much more impressive than ever. Overtaking also needs more efforts with the current engines.
# High Body Weight
The 220 series of cruiser can be considered good as they have a bigger engine and even more parts on the Cruise variant while the 150cc Avenger (148 kg) weighs just 2 kg less than the 220 Street. This makes it lesser powerful than generally every 150cc motorcycle around the segment, which lies between 132 to 136 kg.
# No Rear Disc Brake
The use of just front disc brake lowers its value for money perspective. The nearly same priced Pulsar 220F uses dual discs while the Avenger misses out on the disc brake and uses a 130 mm drum brake instead. Even though the tyres are good for its size, braking confidence goes down considerably with this move.
# Basic Instrument Console
The instrument console on the Avenger series is just a speedometer with a very small screen for odometer and other details. If a tachometer would have bee installed on the Avenger, most people would have noticed the power output being delivered at higher rpm’s.
