Cleveland Cyclewerks has Reportedly Shut Down Operations in India

According to a recent report from Financial Express, Cleveland Cyclewerks, the US motorcycle brand has reportedly shut down operations in the Indian market. The report suggests that the brand’s assembly plant in Pune has been non-operational from the past eight months. The ongoing economic slowdown in the Indian automobile sector is the major cause of the shut down of the motorcycle brand.

In addition to the slowing economy, other factors that made the brand fall off the wagon could be the hefty price tags of the motorcycles as well as the brand’s inability to abide with the current safety rules which include the necessary introduction of ABS as standard. Apart from these, the brand was also facing negative feedback from the buyers for the use of Chinese parts for its motorcycle range.

Debuted at the Auto Expo 2018, the Cleveland Cyclewerks offered a portfolio of two motorcycles in India namely Ace and Misfit. The former featured a retro-modern scrambler theme while the latter was introduced with a cafe racer design language.

Powering both the motorcycles is a 229cc, air-cooled single-cylinder engine that is capable of generating a maximum power figure of 15.4HP and a peak torque of 16Nm. The engine is mated to a five-speed gearbox.

The CCW Ace and Misfit were available in India at a price tag of INR 2.23 lakhs and INR 2.49 lakhs respectively while competes in the market with the likes of Royal Enfield Classic 350 and the Jawa 300. The motorcycles were imported at the Pune assembly plant as CKD units.

The brand launched its first dealership in Mumbai and planned to register more than 100 dealerships across the country but the economic slowdown and several other factors didn’t work in CCW’s favour making them drop its operations altogether. The customers already owning the Ace and Misfit motorcycles would now have to get the service done from local mechanics.
