Harley-Davidson Iron 1200 was recently launched in the US for $9,999. Indian market will soon receive the new model as Harley is known to bring new products faster than others here. It is basically an Iron 883 with bigger engine and slight changes to overall body design.
Visually, buyers will get an added headlight fairing, redesigned rider seat with slight gap between the tank and itself, redesigned exhaust outlets and higher than usual handlebar. Alloy wheel design also lacks the chrome insertion that was seen in Iron 883. They could discontinue the 883 in coming weeks.
As Indian market gets Iron 883 at INR 8.72 lakh and 1200 Custom at INR 9.79 lakh, placing the Iron 1200 around INR 9.49 lakh would not be a difficult decision for Harley-Davidson. For those who know the Harley lineup completely, Iron 1200 uses the body of 883 and packs in the engine from 1200 Custom.
Unlike Iron 883, the rider will not need to bend so that handlebar gets closer. Ape hanger unit used here is closer to the rider and much more beneficial for longer than usual rides. The amount of exposed frame has increased in Iron 1200 for sure.
The engine has been tuned for Iron 1200 to produce 99 Nm of massive torque at just 3500 rpm. It weighs 256 kg and thus, power to weight ratio has improved very much over the Iron 883. As Harley-Davidson offers color and ABS variant for increased price, buyers can expect the Indian model to also offer these options soon.
Harley Davidson is expected to drop prices for its entire imported range as excise duty on CBUs was reduced few days back. Iron 1200 may not fall in that list as it would arrive in India through CKD route with high amounts of localization.
