Effect of GST on Bike Prices in India | 31 Percent Tax on Bikes above 350cc
GST came into existence from July 1, 2017. The day marked considerable changes in all tax structures and helped India unite under a single framework. This has led to hundreds of questions in the minds of automotive fans around the country. Most are worried about their buying plans as GST as affected their budget in one or the other manner. What was the effect of GST on a motorcycle buyer? This is the biggest question regarding GST and here is the right answer.
According to GST, the bikes which are under 350cc, will now attract a tax rate of 28 percent instead of 30 percent under the old tax structure. For example, the price of Bajaj Pulsar NS200, Honda CB Hornet, and Suzuki Gixxer SF, all have been slashed by a considerable margin. Suzuki Gixxer SF Fi was launched at INR 93,499 but now costs INR 93,000 (keeping in mind its April 2017 price tag of INR 94,000).
According to GST, the bikes which are under 350cc, will now attract a tax rate of 28 percent instead of 30 percent under the old tax structure. For example, the price of Bajaj Pulsar NS200, Honda CB Hornet, and Suzuki Gixxer SF, has been slashed by a small margin. However, according to GST, the bikes which are above 350cc will attract 3 percent additional cess in addition to 28% as per the new tax rates.
To sum it up, GST tax on bikes under 350cc is 28 percent (reduced from 30 percent) and GST tax on bikes above 350cc is 31 percent (increased from 30 percent).The price of bikes under 350cc has been reduced by around 2 percent and the bikes above 350cc got a price hike of around 1 percent. But it depends on the brand, some of the companies have reduced the prices and some of the brands have hiked the prices, like KTM has also increased the price of RC 200 and Duke 200, which are under 350cc!

After the implementation of GST, changes can also be seen on the service side. The tax rate on spares has gone up to 28 percent while tax for services is even get higher by 3 percent. This will result in a bigger labor charge in your final bill after servicing. Hybrid vehicles now also cost more as 30.5 percent tax will waive off the incentives on offer and thus, resulting in more prices (INR 4.5 lakh increase in Toyota Prius) than ever. The prices in Delhi will get the smallest effect while states where high amount of taxes were charged will get the maximum benefits.
