LML To Make An Electrical Return In September This Year

Lohia Machines Ltd (LML) is working to make a comeback this year. For a substantial number of Indians, LML would bring nostalgia, as LML Vespa was a prominent brand in India for a long time. The company sold it in partnership with Piaggio and Daelim.

However, in the early 2000s, the scooter market waned and LML failed to make an impression and shot into trouble and eventually shut down its Kanpur plant in 2018. After all that, LML is finally planning a revival of the Indian market on their 50th anniversary with their 3 new electric vehicles: E-Hyperbike, E-Bike and an electric scooter.

The return of LML is being coordinated by SG Corporate Mobility (SGCM), which acquired the rights of LML in late 2021. Now it will be recognized as the LML Electric and will be engaging in the same territory with Detel, which is also owned by SGCM. Details will focus on the low-speed products intended for Tier-2 and Tier-3 areas. While the LML will concentrate on urban mobility and premium products.

LML is in the conversations with a few state authorities for a location to put up a fresh greenfield facility. The announcement will be made in late 2022 and the facility will be functional by 2024. Till then, LML Electric plans to produce its vehicles in India from the former Harley-Davidson plant in Bawal, Haryana, which has a capacity of around 200,000 units per year.

eROCKIT Germany is going to collaborate with LML Electric regarding the technology and products. eROCKIT is said to contribute core technology and a platform for LML products. LML will act with eROCKIT to develop and customise them to the Indian demands. LML also plans to export their vehicles and they will manufacture goods for eROCKIT in India and ship them to other countries.

E-Hyperbike is thought to provide a range of 120 km on a single charge with pedal assist. The motorcycle is expected to have a top speed of 90 KMPH with about 20 hp of power. LML E-Hyperbike deliveries are likely to be commenced around January 2023 while the deliveries of E-Bike might start around August 2023. The details of the scooter are not known, but it is assumed to be in the same space as the Ather 450x and Ola S1 Pro.
