No Bajaj-Branded Motorcycles from Bajaj-Triumph Deal: According to recent reports, the Bajaj-Triumph partnership which took roots back in January 2020 will not introduce a premium motorcycle with Bajaj branding.
According to the non-equity treaty signed between the two brands, the Indian markets will witness the launch of motorcycles in the 200cc-750cc category under the partnership though, the first-ever bike to be made available will feature a Triumph branding and will actually cost less than INR 2 lakh.
In addition to this, the brands will churn out a host of motorcycles in the different displacement and style segments for the Indian markets that will be manufactured at the Bajaj Chakan plant in Pune.
According to Rajiv Bajaj, Bajaj Auto is a mass-market brand and the introduction of a premium motorcycle under such brand name would not make sense and won’t be able to sell in mass numbers. Though Bajaj has become the only distributor of the Triumph motorcycles in the Indian as well as other markets, it has decided to play in the backend and manufacture the motorcycles under the Triumph branding. Moreover, Bajaj already features multiple bikes in the segment that will be manufactured from the partnership.
The reports also suggest that the upcoming Triumph bikes will be based on KTM platforms that have been designed in India. This way, Bajaj will be able to save the production cost as the upcoming motorcycle portfolio will share the same parts while at the same time, it will allow Bajaj to price them at attractive prices for the Indian audience.
The Triumph motorcycle that would be the maiden motorcycle developed from the partnership of Triumph and Bajaj will be priced below INR 2 lakh and will be the entry-level motorcycle that will feature a KTM Duke 200 inspired 200cc engine. The future can further witness the launch of Triumph motorcycles based on the KTM Duke 250 and 390 platforms though one can also expect the new portfolio to feature a bike in the twin-cylinder motorcycle segment as well.
