Supreme Court of India recently rejected the idea of selling the left over stock of BS3 products after 31 March 2017. The apex court explained that automakers had enough time to switch from BS3 to BS4 emission norms and they could have changed before holding around 8,24,000 units of unsold vehicles. The things are not that easy for automotive sector as 670000 two wheelers, 96000 commercial vehicles, 40000 three wheelers and 16000 passenger vehicles makes this list quite heartbreaking for the companies. All of these would end up in the dealer stockyards if remain unsold before April 1, 2017.
Supreme Court Bans Sale of BS3 Vehicles from April 1
The statement issued by court explained that heath of people who are breathing the air is more important than these vehicles and even reminded them that they had nearly 7 years for planning the inventories before the emission norms would come into effect. Many automobile leaders like Toyota, Mercedes Benz and Bajaj Auto were ready for the change from last few months and feared loss of sales if the lower priced competitors were allowed to ell their BS3 products in the market. It is still unknown that what would be the fate of these unsold vehicles as most of the components on BS4 bikes are shared with them.
Honda Activa 3G
The given deadline of 31 March 2017 brought big discounts from the major manufacturers as Ducati was heard selling its Scrambler with INR 2 lakh discount while Honda is currently offering upto INR 22,000 on the complete list of BS3 products remaining with the dealers. The biggest share of BS3 motorcycles is from Hero MotoCorp but they have not announced anything regarding the discounts with the media. The new emission norms will cut the amount of pollutants by a large margin, helping the government keep its promise of providing a healthier nation to more than 1.25 billion residents.
