Chandigarh Traffic Police Puts a Ban on Loud Aftermarket Exhausts

Chandigarh Police has planned a crackdown on motorcycles with loud exhausts that are currently running on city roads through a public interest message. Their post clearly explains that modified silencers are not allowed and users can attract INR 1000 worth fine for their first offence.

Repeated offences will attract multiple times the standard fine while vehicle seizing is another option if riders do not obey given directions. They have even shared their WhatsApp number (9779580985) for ease of citizens to report such cases. They can either send photos of the number plates or report times when riders create nuisance around their area.

Traffic Police also conducted an awareness drive for mechanics and owners of shops in motor market sector-27. They educated people regarding effects of noise pollution and fines that one will attract if they break traffic rules. They explained that those cracker sounds from Bullet exhausts are not legal and people do no need to tolerate them at any cost.

They regularly receive complaints regarding loud exhaust sounds from residential sectors and have even shortlisted some popular locations where these kinds of events are commonly reported. Chandigarh Police is known to be strict when enforcing the right rules and these messages are more like clear warnings.

The only question that arise in mind of bikers is about the validity of this new warning. Will police use decibel meter to measure the sound or just issue a challan on the basis of design of motorcycle exhaust? To be precise, many exhaust manufacturers are using such filters inside the exhaust that the sound produced does not goes beyond the decibel limit.

But still, without a decibel meter, they will fall prey to this new campaign. Most superbikes are offered with custom exhausts that are tested under this meter and their filters can be removed when travelling on highway specific routes for aural pleasure.
