Yamaha has officially unveiled an all-new 125cc scooter, FreeGo 125 at the 2018 Indonesia Motor Show. The scooter is distinguished by sleek rear panels, Ray inspired front section with sporty headlight, sharp fairing and matching black exhaust finish. The scooter comes with 12-inch tires at both ends, further looking great with six-spoke black alloy wheels and wide tubeless tires. The engine used here is 125cc, single-cylinder unit with air cooling and fuel injection, producing 9.4 HP at 8000 rpm and 9.5 Nm at 5500 rpm. The gearbox stays automatic for maximum ease of riding for all age groups.
Indian market is in desperate need of 125c scooters as present generation Suzuki Access, TVS NTorq and Honda Activa are the only three high selling products in this range. Yamaha can launch the 125cc engine with carburetor setting to save on pricing and even employ this 125cc motor under the fairing of popular Fascino and Ray ZR to get the maximum benefits of part sharing. On the other hand, FreeGo can itself arrive in the country with 1905mm of length, 690mm width and 1100mm of overall height. It weighs just 100 kilograms and brings 25-liter of under seat storage with 4.2-liter fuel carrying capacity.
The fuel filler is located in the front section, saving the effort of leaving the seat before getting a refill. Yamaha can further implement cost-cutting through smaller tires for India. The expected price for a 125cc Yamaha scooter falls between INR 58,000-60,000 as they already have 110cc options over INR 55,000. The base version seen in Indonesia costs RP 18.5 million (INR 90,000 approx) while the top spec model comes with ABS for RP 22.5 million (INR 1.09 lakh). The same pricing will not be applicable, in case the brand plans to bring FreeGo into India.
