One of the brands who pioneered the hatchback segment in India, Maruti Suzuki was among the first brands to bring the automatic gearbox to their lineup of hatchbacks. The company uses an AMT gearbox, which stands for Automated Manual Transmission. Although the AMT does not provide the riding smoothness as a DSG, it is significantly cheaper.

Normal automatic gearboxes are offered with a price difference of about INR 1 lakh, while the AMT is offered with a price difference of INR 30,000 between the automatic model and its manual counterpart. Baleno uses a CVT gearbox, which is more technologically advanced than the AMT. Maruti Suzuki offers the following automatic hatchbacks in their lineup:

The company came up with the automatic gearbox when they launched the new generation of their cars which includes the likes of the Tiago and the Tigor. Tata employs the use of the AGS transmission system, which is the same as the AMT, and it stands for Automated Gear Shift.
