Last year, BMW caused quite a stir in the electric vehicle market by unveiling the CE 02 electric scooter; this innovative electric two wheeler quickly moved through the overseas markets to the UK and USA as well. It added to the intrigue too that the CE 02 platform wasn’t just a concept developed in Munich – BMW had also put it into production in India, in collaboration with its local partner, TVS.
The electric scooter, itself a global success after the CE 02 was launched, is now set to hit Indian roads later this year. Yet buyers should not expect a low price or trim, basic electrical vehicle, as the CE 02 isn’t intended to be such a commuter for the city streets.
These consist in Premium Positioning and Price Points.
The CE 02 in the USA can be bought for USD 7,599 that comes down to about Rs 6.2 lakh, while the Highline trim goes for USD 8,474 or about Rs 7 lakh. Because the CE 02 will be made in India, it is marketed as a premium offering and prices might as well be beyond the TVS X’s Rs 2.49 lakh. In fact, apart from the concept itself, the rumours are that it could even be the most expensive electric two wheeler in India, although that is unconfirmed.
Globally, BMW has brought in a few high end scooters in the Indian market, C 400 GT maxi-scooter being one of them. As the most expensive scooter in the country, the C 400 GT comes for Rs 11.25 lakh. Like the C 400 GT, the CE-02 will be more affordable than what’s expected for the C 400 GT, but its advanced features and innovative technologies will come with a premium price.
It’s a unique offering, hybrid in a sense to the range of electric bikes and electric scooters. Noteable design features are the lack of a floorboard section and motorcycle like footpegs. The CE 02 is powered by 2 split lithium-ion battery packs with a combined capacity of 2kWh, giving a claimed range of 90km. The CE 02, in its most powerful configuration, has 15hp to allow for a claimed top speed of 95kph. The CE 02 tips the scales at 132kg, and promises a fun, efficient electric riding experience.
Just as people are getting excited about the launch of this car in India, people are eagerly waiting for more details on pricing and specs to test drive BMW’s highly innovative electric ride in Indian roads.
