Brand-Wise Sales Report of Cars [March 2017]

Indian car manufacturers witnessed a growth of 9 percent in the last financial year. March 2017 saw variable sales among many manufacturers while market leaders witnessed growth during the same period. New launches and extra ordinary performing products made the bulk of sales during each month of the year. Here is a detailed report for Indian car sales for March 2017.

Chevrolet witnessed a large drop in sales from the same month last year. They sold a total of 1318 units in March 2017 while 3044 units moved out of showrooms in March 2016. The worst drop was for Enjoy MPV, unable to sell even one unit in March 2017. Chevrolet Cruze was the only model to register positive growth, selling around 192 units (78% growth) in March 2017.

The numbers went even worse for Fiat India as they were able to sell just 353 units in March 2017. They even had only 632 units sale in March 2016. The worst was Abarth lineup with only 4 units while collectively Punto, Punto Evo and Avventura sold 311 units. The premium Linea sedan sold 38 units in March 2017 while is had 101 units on the sales list of March 2016.

Apart from Ford Figo, all other cars in the lineup witnessed positive growth in Indian market. However, their sales number is not as strong as the market leaders. The best selling product in the lineup is Ford EcoSport with 4662 units for March 2017. Aspire sold 2481 units, Figo moved 1126 units and Endeavour got 390 buyers. Even Ford Mustang sold 41 units in March 2017.

Ford sold 41 Mustangs in India in March 2017

Honda City registered 11 percent growth (6271 sold in March 2017) from March 2016 while all others witnessed a negative sales report. WR-V registered 3833 units and Jazz moved 3527 units from the dealerships. BR-V even sold 1436 units in March 2017. Sales of Mobilio dropped to 0 units while big drop can even be seen in CR-V and Brio’s sales figures. Honda Accord even found 28 owners in the same month.

Hyundai sold a total of 44,757 units in March 2017. Elantra, Creta and Grand i10 helped the company score positive growth numbers while considerable drop in sales of Verna, Xcent and Santa Fe was a reason of worry for the company. Newly launched Tucson found 146 homes while i10 sold not even a single unit in the same month. Hyundai i20 Elite was the second highest selling car after Grand i10.

Mahindra witnessed major drop in sales for NuvoSport, Verito and Vibe. All of these were least appealing while Bolero and Xylo reported highest growth during the same period. March 2017 saw 2440 TUVs and 2663 XUVs moving out of the dealerships. Scorpio sold 5157 units in March 2017 while no cars from the Rexton brand moved from the dealerships last month.

Mahindra-Sales

Maruti, India’s largest car manufacturer stood first in overall sales with 1,27,695 units sold in March 2017. It is nearly three times the second brand, Hyundai. Most of the products had 5 digit sales number. Baleno carries the highest growth registered, selling 163 percent more cars than before (16426 units in March 2017). Alto still stays at the top with 18868 units while Ignis registers 5209 units.

Maruti sold 16,426 units of Baleno in March 2017

Nissan & Datsun sold a total of 5,309 cars and this equated to 57 percent growth from the same month last year. Major jump was seen due to Redi-Go hatchback while most other cars (except Sunny) registered negative growth. No premium car, including the recently launched GT-R was sold within the same period. Before Redi-Go, Nissan Micra was the highest selling product.

Renault saw a minor 2 percent drop in its overall sales. KWID was the only shining star in the lineup, selling 10,296 units in March 2017. All others, including the Duster, saw sales fall in between 19 to 100 percent. Scala sold 0 units while Duster sold just 1566 units in the month of March 2017.

Skoda India registered positive growth of 21 percent, selling 1696 units in March 2017. The highest selling product, Skoda Rapid sold 1274 units, thanks to its design update that looks more in line with premium products. Octavia and Yeti saw a decrease in sales while company’s flagship product, the Superb registered a growth of 111 percent, selling 184 units in the same month.

Tata’s peppy new Tiago sold 4619 units while its compact sedan hatchback, Tigor sold around 3011 units. Apart from getting negative numbers through Nano, Bolt, Indica and Indigo, Tata Motors managed to gain an overall growth of 83 percent. Their recently launched Hexa found 940 buyers while existing products like Sumo and Zest brought positive sales to the company.

Tata-Sales

Toyota sold a total of 13,796 units in March 2017. The number brought them 81% growth in the month on month analysis. The most appealing products in the lineup, Fortuner and Innova Crysta sold 2060 and 7252 units respectively. Fortuner’s growth rate was 328% while Innova gained 159 percent. Apart from Corolla Altis and Camry, all other products did very well.

Volkswagen gained 34 percent growth in March 2017, selling 4792 units in March 2017. Ameo, the recently launched compact sedan, gathered a total of 2012 buyers while Jetta, on the other hand could get just 1 buyer in March 2017. Bettle could not even find a single buyer while Vento registered a positive growth of 31% with 1432 units sold in the same time.
