The Japanese car manufacturer Honda intends to enter the mid-size SUV segment in the Indian car market by launching its Made-In-India SUV in August 2023. Honda India recently confirmed that the company is actively working on the development of India-spec cars for the segment. At present, all other brands are also working on the same segment because Indian car lovers are showing immense interest in mid-size and compact SUVs.
According to the sources, Honda’s forthcoming mid-size SUV has been internally codenamed 31XA. In a recent interview, Rajesh Goel, Senior Vice President and Director, Sales and Marketing, Honda Cars India, stated that an “India oriented SUV” is in the works. He conceded that the trend toward SUVs had “accelerated in the first seven months of this year,” with SUV market share increasing by as much as 34%.
The manufacturer revealed the N7X Concept for the Indonesian market a few months ago, which is effectively the BR-V replacement worldwide. The N7X might be released in India as a five-seater, making it a significant competitor to the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, VW Taigun, and Skoda Kushaq. In addition, the manufacturer recently patented the ‘Elevate’ nameplate in India, which may be used for the SUV. It is also rumoured that the company will use the same architecture and powertrain that was used in fifth-gen Honda City.
On the other hand, Honda India will keep focusing on its sedan segment as well. Despite recent sales declines, Honda believes there is still a strong market for sedans in India. According to Mr Goel, plenty of sedan launches by luxury carmakers make it evident that Indians still love such models. It is also being said that the brand is planning a hybrid car for the Indian vehicle market which is likely to be the hybrid version of its popular sedan City.
