Disappointingly Low Score For Hyundai i20 In Latest Crash Tests

Hyundai i20 was one of the three cars that were tested in the latest batch by Global NCAP, along with Hyundai Creta and Toyota Urban Cruiser. Both i20 and Creta have scored an overall score of 3-star out of 5. The i20 got an overall rating of 3-star for both adult and child occupants. It got 8.84 out of 17 for adults and 36.89 out of 49 for children.

The tests were conducted on the Hyundai i20 (RHD) 5-door hatch, which weighs around 1193 kg. The crash test was performed at 64 km/h and the body integrity was deemed unstable. It was the standard model with 2-airbags, ABS, SBR, Front Seatbelt Pre-tensioners and ISOFIX anchorages, with no side airbags for head/body or knee bags.

Speaking of the detailed information about the test, the protection of the driver’s head was adequate and the passenger’s head was good. Good protection was seen for the driver’s and the passenger’s necks. With good protection to the passenger’s chest, the i20 offered weak chest protection for the driver.

Driver’s and passenger’s knees had marginal protection and were susceptible to thrashing around the dashboard. The driver’s tibia and passenger’s right tibia showed adequate protection, whereas the left tibia had good protection. Bodyshell and footwell were equated to be unstable, as their integrity was questionable.

The seat for the 3-year-old was the FWF installed with ISOFIX anchorages with TT, which managed to reduce the excessive forward head movement, but its deceleration showed vulnerability to the neck area. The chest had good protection.

A 1.5-year-old child seat was installed with RWF with ISOFIX anchorages and support leg offering good protection in the head and the neck area. There were no CRS incompatibly found and the CRS marking was permanent. It provides the lap belt in the rear centre seat and the ISOFIX anchorages were as per standard.
