Hyundai’s luxury vehicle division Genesis recently unveiled its first SUV, the GV80. The SUV launched in Seoul, South Korea is basically the production-spec version of the GV80 concept shown at the 2017 New York auto show. Going by the design, the GV80 premium SUV carries its styling from the concept, though it is slightly squared off and has an overall toned-down profile.
At the front, the GV80 gets the company’s signature ‘crest’ grille that is flanked by a quad-headlight setup. The sides of the SUV comprises of a prominent shoulder line that runs the length of the vehicle. At the back, it has sharply raked D-pillar, split tail-lamp set up and has a moniker written Genesis across the tailgate which completes its impressive looks. Coming to the interiors, the SUV gets featured with a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system.
The brand has tried to minimise the use of physical buttons by placing a capacitive touchscreen lower down in the centre console for the climate control system. It also has a digital instrument cluster, a two-spoke steering wheel and a rotary gear-selector knob. To enhance the premium quotient, the brand has used leather throughout the cabin, along with wood and metallic accents.
Mechanically, the Genesis GV80 shares its platform with Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade. The car will be powered by a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder turbo-diesel engine that produces 278HP of maximum power and 588Nm of peak torque. Internationally, the brand is expected to offer the GV80 with a 2.5-litre, six-cylinder petrol engine that produces 304HP of maximum power, and a 3.5-litre V6 petrol unit that churns out 380HP.
The Genesis GV80 SUV is equipped with an active noise cancellation system that eliminates road-noise. In addition to that, the car is also equipped with an air purification system and a driver monitoring system that monitors the alertness of the driver. It has augmented reality navigation that displays driving guidelines on a real-time video feed from the front-facing camera.
Hyundai’s premium brand Genesis will mark its entry in the Indian market by launching an SUV as their first product. The carmakers believe that it would be quite popular, though there is no official statement regarding the GV80’s launch in India.
