Hyundai Kona Electric Explodes Inside a Garage in Canada

As per a recent media report, a Hyundai Kona Electric has exploded inside a garage at Île Bizard (Montreal), Canada, taking off the doors of the garage and make them land across the street. Thankfully, the people present at the unfortunate event did not get injured. Sources tell that though the electric vehicle was plugged-in but wasn’t on charging mode. The fire service department of Montreal is confused as the reason behind the blast is not yet clear.

The Hyundai Kona Electric was bought by the owner back in March whereas the investigation of the event is in the process by the fire service department. The event is a first-of-its-kind and it’s interesting to note that the car did not just catch fire but actually exploded which is unusual as such events can be possible with a gas-powered car but not with an electric vehicle.

Not more than a cell-level battery explosion can be expected but its impact will not be as massive as this one. Speculations are also there that the explosion must have taken place due to the rising temperature in Montreal, Canada.

The all-electric SUV entered the Indian market on July 9 and has been booked by 120 customers till date. It was launched with a price tag of INR 25.30 Lakh (ex-showroom India). The Hyundai Kona is being retailed through 15 dealerships across 11 cities in the country. Kona is equipped with a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor, which generates a power of 133HP and a peak torque of 395Nm.

The motor of the EV is powered by a 39.2kWh lithium-ion polymer battery that also has a liquid cooling technology. The battery gets charged in 9 hours when done through a standard charger but gets fully charged in 57 minutes when done by a 50kW DC fast charger. When Kona gets fully charged, the India-spec model of the SUV is capable to cover 452kms according to the ARAI standards.
