2020 Mahindra Thar is currently under testing while we have witnessed several leaked photos of the updated SUV over the past few months. The spy shots for both the hardtop and soft-top version of the SUV are out and showcases the updated Thar with a ribbed design seen from the top angle.
One can expect the brand to officially launch the updated Thar SUV at the 2020 Auto Expo, which will begin on February 7 next year. Coming to the major cosmetic updates offered to the SUV, the new images clearly show the rear with a glass section while the side profile is well-hidden under the camouflage pattern though portrays the LED tail lights well integrated into the rear bumper.
The new model of the Thar is wider than the ongoing variant, featuring Jeep Wrangler-inspired front fascia and glass section. Unlike the older variant, the 2020 Mahindra Thar comes with a flat windshield like the most of the modern-day SUVs. The doors continue to feature the old and reliable external hinge system while interiors are all-new with a more car-like feel.
The tires seen on the recently spotted production model of the SUV features alloy wheels though they are only expected to be offered on the top-spec variants. The fender size has increased in comparison to the current-gen Thar as provision for even wider off-road tires will be available on the car.
The roof of the upcoming 2020 model is said to be removable, helping buyers enjoy the sun and wind on a day when the weather is in favour of the passengers. In terms of the design, the front and rear lights will remain more or less similar to the current-gen Thar.
The 2020 Mahindra Thar features a reworked interior with a better quality dash section featuring a touchscreen infotainment system compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The SUV has been offered an impressive console section that proves to be in-line with other cars around the segment. The manual 4×4 system will remain intact to the car’s drivetrain while expecting the new 2.0L, BS6-compliant diesel engine to perform like a gem won’t be wrong.
The new chassis is derived from the same platform as the upcoming 2020 Mahindra Scorpio while safety features like the reverse parking sensors, crash protection, ABS, EBD, and dual front airbags will arrive as standard. The price tag for the new car is expected to be higher than the present-gen Thar variant and will fall around INR 11-12 lakh (ex-showroom).
