Mahindra is a pioneer in utility vehicles, just as Maruti is a pioneer in small, fuel-efficient cars. The Indian automaker is well-known for its UVs, whether MUVs or SUVs.
Thar established Mahindra as the best-selling lifestyle off-road vehicle manufacturer after entering the segment. Thar is so popular that even after two years, waiting times are still very long. With Force and Maruti Suzuki attempting to push this growing segment, Mahindra has been hard at work developing a 5-door Thar.
The latest Thar 5-door SUV was spotted testing along with the three-door model. This indicates that testing procedures are being followed precisely. It gets the same tailgate at the rear as the front and LED tail lights, rear fog lamps, spare wheel housing, and a bumper.
The rear suspension appears to have been slightly modified, with a new beefier sway bar that is now located below the differential. There is no emission testing equipment, so we can expect the same set of petrol and diesel engines.
Mahindra Senior VP & Head of Automotive Product Development R Velusamy has confirmed that the upcoming 5-door Thar will be based on the Scorpio-N platform, which is based on a heavily modified Thar 3-door platform. Mahindra claims that 81% of this platform is made of high-strength steel. As a result, the Thar 5-door can get the same penta-link suspension as the Scorpio-N.
2023 Mahindra Thar 5-door may not come standard with a 4X4 system like the 3-door Thar, making it more accessible. It will be powered by the same engines as the Thar 3-door, Scorpio-N, and XUV700. Power and torque output are likely to be comparable to the Scorpio-N.
Mahindra will release the 5-door Thar in 2023, around the same time as the 5-door Jimny. When it is released, Thar 5-door will compete with the 5-door Gurkha and the 5-door Jimny. Pricing is expected to be around Rs. 1 lakh to 1.5 lakh, higher than the 3-door Thar.
