Sadly, a Mahindra Thar was recently involved in a disastrous crash in Jharkhand, where the vehicle was reported to have completely crushed between two other vehicles. From the images of the damaged Mahindra Thar that have surfaced on the internet, we can see that the Thar is badly damaged from the rear, top, and left-hand side. The owner of that Mahindra Thar has now elaborated on the entire incident.
As per the sources, Mrs Reena Rajesh, the vehicle owner, described the entire incident in detail in a Facebook post in a group called “Mahindra Thar 2021 Official Owner’s Group.” The Thar owner’s husband was driving the SUV on NH33 on the day of the accident when it was rear-ended by a truck. As a result, the driver of the SUV lost control. It eventually rolled over and rear-ended another truck parked on the side of the highway.
Fortunately, the driver escaped with only a minor cut on his palm from a shattered piece of glass. The Thar, on the other hand, was severely damaged on all sides in this accident. However, the matter of concern was that the airbags failed to deploy during the accident. But a closer look at the images reveals that the impact on the front bumper was not severe enough to activate the airbag sensors installed behind it.
The front bumper of the crashed Mahindra Thar appears to be almost undamaged, which means that the airbag sensors failed to detect the impact and did not cause the front airbags to deploy.
It’s worth noting here that the Mahindra Thar received widespread acclaim after receiving a commendable 4-star rating in the Global NCAP crash tests. The SUV was developed in-house and received 12.52 points out of a possible 17 for adult occupant protection and 41.11 points out of a possible 49 for child occupant protection.
This is the second-highest rating for child safety among the top 10 safest cars in India. The safety features offered in the new model of Mahindra Thar include dual airbags, a roll cage, ABS and rear parking sensors as standard, while the top-spec model gets Electronic Stability Protection (ESP) as well.
If we talk about the technical specifications of Mahindra Thar, the SUV is available with two engine options: a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine and a 2.0-litre turbocharged mStallion petrol engine. The mHawk130 DOHC 16-valve diesel engine is good for a maximum power of 130 BHP with a peak torque of 300 Nm.
Coming to the petrol option, the mStallion150 T-GDi DOHC 16-valve petrol engine generates a maximum power of 150 BHP along with an utmost torque of 320 Nm. Both engines are available with a 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic gearbox options.
