With a two-front war looming, India is busy beefing up its defence capabilities. It includes border infrastructure development and the acquisition of new weapon systems.

Another critical need is dependable vehicles capable of transporting personnel and supplies on time. To that end, Mahindra recently received an order for 1,470 Mahindra Scorpio Classic vehicles for use by the Indian Army. Some army-spec Scorpio Classics have been spotted at an open warehouse ahead of their dispatch.

Scorpio Classic for the Indian Army comes in a green colour that is seen on army vehicles and uniforms. Because there appears to be no camouflage, these units could be used for activities such as patrolling and personnel movement.

Because there will be hundreds of Scorpio Classic 4WDs delivered to the army, different colour options are possible. From the outside, the army-spec Scorpio Classic appears to have undergone no significant changes. The standard slatted grille is present, as are projector headlamps and LED DRLs, thick body cladding, and functional roof rails.

Much of the interior equipment appears to be the same as the standard Scorpio Classic. It comes with a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system and automatic temperature control. Some of the other key features are 2nd row AC vents, faux leather steering wheel, and tilt steering. It also has a 12V power outlet and fabric seat upholstery.

Dual airbags, engine immobiliser, anti-theft warning, collapsible steering, speed alert, and auto door lock while driving are the safety features. It is possible that some changes could have been made to the army-spec Scorpio Classic’s equipment list.

A 2.2-litre diesel engine powers the Mahindra Scorpio Classic. It comes mated to a 6-speed MT that produces 130 HP and 300 Nm of peak torque. Power and torque may also have been tuned for Army-spec Scorpio Classic. It also has 4WD, which is not available on the regular civilian variant of the SUV.
