It’s Official: Next-Gen Mahindra Thar to Get Automatic Gearbox

The next-gen Mahindra Thar SUV is one of the most-awaited cars in the Indian market. In one of the recent updates, it has been officially confirmed that the BS6-compliant model will also be available with a 6-speed Aisin torque converter automatic gearbox. Speaking at an earnings call for the financial year 2020, Rajesh Jejurika, executive director, Auto & Farm Sectors at Mahindra Group revealed some details about the new Thar. He said: “This is a flagship initiative. It brings in the core product of Mahindra and comes in a wide variety, aggregates, automatic…the works. It will create a new segment.”

In terms of the design, the new-gen Mahindra Thar has been imparted with an upright stance while the overall muscular profile accentuates its rugged appeal. The seven-slat vertical front grille and the wide front bumper remain more or less the same while the overall boxy design profile with the round headlight design and flared up wheel arches accentuate it further.

The brand is expected to equip the updated SUV with a BS6 2.2-litre diesel engine that will be capable of offering maximum power of 140HP and a peak torque of 300Nm. The engine will be mated to a 6-speed manual transmission as standard while a 4-Wheel-Drive system and a 6-speed automatic transmission will be on offer as an option.

It is also being rumoured that the next-gen Mahindra Thar will be available with a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine option as well. Once launched in India, the new-gen Mahindra Thar is expected to get a starting price tag of around INR 11-12 lakh (ex-showroom).

In terms of the interior, the all-new dual-pod instrument cluster adds to the premium look of the new-gen model while the brand has offered a vertical MID display in the middle of the speedometer and the tachometer. In addition to this, the interior of the updated SUV will feature a touchscreen infotainment system compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The new-gen Mahindra Thar will get cruise control, automatic climate control and more cabin space for additional comfort.
