Just a few days after the announcement of phasing-out all diesel engines from their lineup by April 2020, Maruti Suzuki Ertiga 1.5 Diesel has been launched in India for INR 9.86 lakh. The engine used here is the familiar 1.5L diesel unit from the Ciaz, producing 95 HP at 4000 rpm and 225 Nm at 1500-2500 rpm. The ARAI certified mileage stands at 24.20 kmpl, while the engine is available with a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard, leaving the option of an automatic variant vacant for the present. Expecting the same in the near future would be wrong as the brand feels no need of continuing the diesel engine in India after the BS6 emission norms come into action from 1st April 2020.
The brand has developed the 1.5L engine to get a worthy replacement to the popular 1.3L diesel motor that was sourced from Fiat but soon after its launch, they felt that updating the motor to meet the strict BS6 emission norms will need more investment than the scope of diesel small cars in India after the deadline comes into action. However, the powerful engine can serve under the bonnet of their export-specific cars and can be sold in markets where the emission norms will not be strict enough to alter their plans of recovering the INR 1000 Crore worth of investment.
Even the number of units sold in India in the next couple of months will recover some part of the cost for sure, further saving them royalty that was to be paid on the Fiat-sourced engine. Maruti Suzuki currently has 11-months to clear their diesel cars, and the production for the small diesel cars will be willingly cut to a smaller number in the coming months to avoid large unsold inventory. Maruti Ertiga has a 39% share in its segment and adding the more powerful engine will further strengthen the position. Here is the variant wise price list for the new Maruti Suzuki Ertiga 1.5 Diesel.
