As expected, Maruti has officially showcased the Suzuki Jimny SUV in India for the first time at the Auto Expo 2020. According to the latest buzz, the new model of the Jimny will launch in the Indian market as a 5-door variant as opposed to the 3-door version showcased at the Auto Expo though there has been no official confirmation received on the same.
Launching the Jimny would be one of the wisest decisions from the brand to target the entry-level compact SUV segment in the Indian market that is currently conquered by the Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon, Ford EcoSport, and the Honda WR-V.
The upcoming Jimny SUV is expected to feature similar designing as well as mechanical bits when compared to the international-spec variants though the wheelbase is expected to be longer to accommodate the extra doors. The front bumper has a large air intake which is blacked-out, just like the outside rear-view mirrors. The wheel arches are flared, enhancing the mini-SUV stance further.
At present, powering the Suzuki Jimny in the international markets is a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that is capable of churning out a maximum power of 104HP and a peak torque of 130Nm. The engine comes mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox as well as an optional 4-speed CVT transmission.
In addition to this, the next-gen Suzuki Jimny SUV is also available with a 660cc turbo-petrol engine though that is only limited to Japanese markets catering to their Kei car rules. The Marut Suzuki Jimny is further expected to be discontinued in the European markets considering the new Co2 emission norms to come into effect from the year 2021.
