Supreme Court Lifts Delhi Ban: Imposes 1% Green Cess on Diesel Cars Above 2000cc

In today’s hearing of the Delhi diesel ban case, Supreme Court has lifted the ban from registration of diesel cars above 2000cc in the capital region. Along with that, the manufacturers have been directed to pay 1% of the cars ex-showroom price as green cess before registration.

The manufacturers have been struggling against the ban from last 8 months. Toyota, Mahindra, Tata, and Mercedes Benz were the most affected with nearly all cars with diesel engines above 2000 cc. They have even hinted that the effect of the cess would be most probably passed on to the buyers.

Supreme Court Lifts Delhi Ban

SIAM, the automotive body regulating the industry were against the diesel ban as they saw the change in investment plans of these manufacturers. Even the government was strongly opposing the diesel ban in its last days and said it to be a wrong measure to curb the increasing pollution in the region.

Mahindra & Mahindra’s Director, Mr. Pawan Goenka expressed his feelings about the lifting of the ban and said that it will help the automakers achieve the BS6 emission norms by 2020. This would be again be a proper pollution curbing method as new cars won’t be as polluting as the older ones, thereby decreasing the effect in the coming years.
