A large chunk of buyers shift from smaller to full sized hatchbacks as this offers sedan style legroom and width while not compromising on the ability of hatchback to get away easily though heavy traffic and busy streets.
When considering mass market brands only, smallest Indian hatchback is Tata Nano (3164 mm length) while the longest is Maruti Baleno (3995 mm). In premium cars, Volvo V40 is the longest hatchback at 4370 mm of overall length. Here is a list of top 10 hatchbacks sold in March 2018.

As we can see clearly, Maruti and Hyundai were only two brands that could score five digit sales figure out of their top selling products. Maruti Alto comes with two engine options and thus, buyers can freely choose between more economical Alto 800 and slightly more powerful Alto K10. Swift entered third generation design language recently and got itself second position on this list.
Baleno, the most premium hatchback from Maruti, sold 16,254 units and came third among other hatchbacks. WagonR has a cult following and thus, scoring 14,208 units is not a tough job for this tall boy hatchback. Maruti retails two products at similar prices (Swift and Baleno, Celerio and Ignis) in the hatchback segment. Still, they have enough buyers on their side to get these huge numbers.

Hyundai Elite i20 scored 13,319 units while i10 Grand followed close with 12,476 units for March 2018. Tata Tiago (8,123 units) got itself the seventh position and scored more than popular Maruti Celerio (7,395 units) and Renault Kwid (5,853 units). Being quite expensive than other similar sized
cars, Hyundai Eon still claimed tenth position with 4,500 units during this 31 day period.
