Just a few days before the release of Toyota’s next compact SUV, the Urban Cruiser Hyryder, on July 1, the carmaker officially teased the SUV for the first time via two short videos. The compact SUV is based on a Suzuki platform and will roll out of Toyota’s plant in Karnataka, and will also have a Maruti Suzuki equivalent.
The teaser video shows the muscular Glanza-like front grille seen in previous leaks, along with split-LED DRLs, a large air dam, and a chrome strip separating the DRLs. We also saw the side profile, which had the ‘Hybrid’ emblem on the front doors to show its electric status. A quick look back reveals wraparound tail lamps with a chrome strip connecting two inverted C-shaped LED light guides.
Earlier images of the cabin revealed a 9-inch Suzuki touchscreen infotainment system, with the exterior teaser video also revealing a 360-degree camera. It should also include a wireless phone charger, a head-up display, connected vehicle technology, and a sunroof.
Two 1.5-litre hybrid powertrains on board will be the major draw. The first is a 103 PS mild hybrid engine, and the second is a segment-first 116 PS strong hybrid system. The mild-hybrid engine will have 6-speed manual and automatic transmission options, while the strong hybrid will have an e-CVT transmission. Mild-hybrid models will feature all-wheel drive, however, the powerful hybrid Hyryder will only have power delivered to the front wheels.
The Urban Cruiser Hyryder will enter series production in August and will be exported to various regions, including Africa, with its Maruti Suzuki equivalent. Because the production of the SUV begins in August, we expect it to be released around the same time or in early September, with prices starting at Rs 10.5 lakh ex-showroom (expected). Toyota and Maruti SUVs will compete with the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Volkswagen Taigun, Skoda Kushaq, and MG Astor.
