Volkswagen Virtus Officially Unveiled: Volkswagen recently unveiled New Virtus Sedan for the South American markets. The car was first seen through a series of spy shots but camouflaged images never cleared its actual stance before the automotive fans.
Based on sixth generation Volkswagen Polo, Virtus is a mid size sedan that uses the familiar MQB platform. One can clearly compare the car with India spec Vento as this product (along with new Polo) is exclusively for the markets where sub 4 meter restriction does not exist.
As it comes with extended wheelbase over the hatchback version, the side profile changes dramatically with large rear doors and neatly flowing roof-line. Virtus comes with class leading 521 liter of boot space.
As with the new Polo, Virtus is highly loaded with technology on the topmost trim. Along with the new infotainment system, buyers will benefit more from the new all-screen instrument console.
South American markets will carry two petrol engine options for the new car. The 1.6L petrol motor will be good for 117 HP and 162 Nm of torque while 1.0L, turbo petrol option brings 128 HP and 200 Nm of torque.
The former comes with 5-speed automatic gearbox while latter uses a better 6-speed automatic unit. Volkswagen has shown no interest in bringing these platforms to India while Skoda is expected to work on a low cost MQB structure that may get used by both the brands in upcoming cars.
If ever launched in India, the car is expected to share engines with present generation Vento. VW’s 1.5L, four cylinder diesel engine is good for 110 PS and 250 Nm while 1.2L, turbo petrol is good for 105 PS and 175 Nm of torque. Both the engines are highly fuel efficient for their class. If ever launched, one can expect a price tag under INR 15 lakh (top spec, on-road).
