Apache RR 310 vs BMW G310R: BMW-Motorrad recently launched the much-awaited G310R in India for INR 2.99 lakh, leaving everyone in a state of confusion since the launch event for the pricing part. TVS Apache RR 310 comes with a price tag of INR 2.23 lakh in Delhi, INR 2.13 lakh in Mumbai and INR 1,99,999 in Cochin. The difference in prices (INR 1 lakh approx) make both the bikes good for two different segments of buyers, one of which will run for practicality and other for the brand name. The difference in the list of components is smaller than the price charged for switching one into the other.

BMW G310R is powered by a 313cc, single cylinder, liquid cooled and fuel injected engine, producing 34 HP and 28 Nm of torque. On the other hand, Apache RR 310 produces the same horsepower but, gets a reduction in torque by 0.7Nm. The full faired Apache is heavier by 11kg, all thanks to added equipment and fairing on the motorcycle. BMW G310R comes with a different instrument console and also brings standard handlebar and seating into action. Apache RR310 comes with clip-on handlebar and split seat for a sportier feel. Both the bikes are available with an identical frame, fuel tank, brakes and suspension components.

TVS offers bi-LED headlights on the Apache, making it more practical in comparison to the halogen headlight on the G310R. Apache RR 310 brings better top speed, lower 0-100 kph number and similar mileage figure to the BMW roadster. Both the bikes are available with 110mm front and 150mm rear tires, wrapped around similar alloy wheel design. They even share the exhaust with each other. TVS Apache RR 310 is a far better option if buyers are not concerned about the brand value associated with their motorcycle, saving a lot of money and still bringing more fun into your life.

KTM 125 Duke vs Honda CB Hornet 160R: Streetfighters are more popular than any other niche body type in India. The practicality added to their origin is the basic factor for high sales, with users getting straight riding position and impressive power to weight ratio at all terms.

KTM 125 Duke is available for INR 1,18,000 and rivals definitely have the edge of better pricing on their side. Honda CB Hornet retails for INR 93,943 for the top variant, getting similar single-channel ABS for the front disc brake. The bigger 162.71cc engine is good for 14.9 HP and 14.5 Nm of torque.

Duke 125, on the other side, is good for 14.5 HP and 12 Nm. The performance remains decent for both bikes while Duke gets an edge for impressive equipment. The USD forks are available on the KTM variant, along with the 6-speed gearbox.

Honda CB Hornet 160R seems to be more biased towards the value for money factor. Also, the street machine from Honda is yet to receive fuel injection. It can also be had for a non-ABS variant at INR 85,943. All prices mentioned in the article are ex-showroom Delhi.

Yamaha R15 V3 vs R15 V2: Yamaha R15 Version 3.0 is available in India for INR 1.27 lakh (Ex-showroom India). It is the most powerful version for this lightweight SuperSport series as none other variant could even reach the power output that is offered in stock version of Yamaha R15 V3. In fact, the list of changes on the third version is huge, covering nearly every aspect of the motorcycle after such a long time.

Yamaha R15 V3 vs R15 V2

Here are the differences that one would get after detailed comparison of Yamaha R15 V3 with R15 V2:

1) Design & Style

The departure from design language of R15 Version 2 is pretty clear on all sides. The new motorcycle is highly inspired from flagship Yamaha R1 and race spec R6 as one could see the design elements that are shared between three of them.

Yamaha R15 V2

Yamaha R15 V3

Yamaha R15 Version 3.0 is more upright while R15 V2 is more like the old school race designs that went extinct with the launch of next generation R1. The fuel tank now feels much bigger in size while capacity is still 1 liter less than the original version.

2) Headlight Design & Layout

Yamaha R15 V3 vs R15 V2

Here comes the next big thing for Yamaha R15. The third generation motorcycle comes with twin LED headlights when compared to those huge twin halogen units on R15 V2. New headlights are sleek, helping the designers save more space for air channeling and weight reduction.

Being LEDs, they have a more powerful overall throw and simultaneously use less power from the battery in their action. The next generation face was even not possible without these headlights as the pointy nose of R15 V2 is now replaced with a mature and aerodynamically more efficient facial expressions.

3) Engine, Power & Torque

Yamaha R15 Version 3.0 carries the most powerful of all 150cc engines available internationally. The 155.1cc, single cylinder, liquid cooled and fuel injected motor is good for 19.3 HP at 10,000 rpm and 15 Nm at 8,500 rpm.

The engine comes mated to a 6-speed gearbox. If compared to the R15 V2 (16.8 BHP and 15 Nm), the values for R15 V3 are highly satisfying. A rider’s personal video in Indonesia has claimed 144 kmph of top speed (as per the speedometer ) for the YZF-R15 V3.

Max. Torque 15.0 Nm @ 8500 rpm 15.0 Nm @ 7500 rpm

4) Assist & Slipper Clutch

The 6-speed gearbox on Yamaha R15 Version 3 is paired to slipper clutch for better on-track performance. The other name for slipper clutch is back torque limiter, briefly explaining the function of this equipment through these three words only.

It not just eliminates the effect of engine braking during deceleration, the freewheel mechanism helps the rear wheel stay in place and keeps the required traction alive. Whenever the rear wheel tries to push the engine over its own limit, the clutch disengages itself to save the rider as well as motorcycle from the resulting loss.

5) Variable Valves Actuation (VVA)

Yamaha R15 Version 3 is equipped with VVA technology. It stands for Variable Valve Actuation. It is a technology that select intake cam lobes for low speed and high speed range. A certain rpm is considered as the shifting point (6000 rpm in this case) and that results in linear acceleration on both the ends.

That helps the rider enjoy the feel of getting equal ratio of power on both low end and top end of the rev range. If we remove VVA from the setup, one would surely feel the need of riding above a certain rpm limit as most riders of the R15 V2 feel in real world driving conditions.

6) Suspension

Yamaha R15 V3 vs R15 V2

The 2018 model of Yamaha R15 comes with standard telescopic forks for the Indian market. USD Forks were limited to the Indonesian model only. The benefits of upside down forks includes improved handling, longer slider for more reliability and added rigidness to stay alive after hard braking on high capacity motorcycles.

The motorcycle stops when we brake but all of the impact goes right into the suspension as it is the connecting part between the tyre and rest of the body. All of the body weight pushes the suspension to the opposite direction on a bike.

7) Instrument Console

Yamaha R15 V2 has one of the most beautiful console among all bikes in India. Still, it lacks a lot features when compared to arch rivals and that resulted in the use of fully digital instrument console on third generation model.

The console on V3 now comes with features like instantaneous mileage, average fuel used, gear shift indicator, digital tachometer and VVA indicator. It is easy to read and has dedicated odometer, trip-meter and a large speed display in the middle. One can see the digital fuel indicator on the extreme right side.

8) Shades

Yamaha R15 V2 is known for its gloss filled shades from its initial days of launch. They have been actively playing with colors from almost one decade as every year, a couple of new shades were found for the motorcycle.

This time, Yamaha R15 Version 3.0 is offered with Racing Blue and Thunder Grey as their shades. Yamaha has not launched the Matte Black shade in India as this particular shade is exclusive for Indonesia. They have even brought the MotoGP edition for 3500 buyers.

R15 V3 Matte Black Shade is not available in India

9) Tyres

Yamaha R15 V3 use better tyres when compared to the present version. The front measures 100/80-17 while rear used on V3 is massive 140/70-17. This adds more traction to R15 as newly developed high performance engine sends much more power to the rear wheel in comparison to the old version.

R15 V2 comes with 90/80-17 and 130/70-17 tyres at front and rear respectively. Wider tyre, along with its wider sidewall helps the motorcycle absorb bumps in a better way on R15 V3. The brake, tyre and suspension combination enhances the overall performance of this motorcycle.

Rear Tyre 140/70-17 130/70-17

10) Brakes

Yamaha is using bigger 282mm front and 220mm rear disc brake on R15 V3. This combination is much more effective than 267mm and 220mm brakes on the V2. The increase in surface area facilitates better braking on the new bike.

Unfortunately, the much awaited anti-lock braking system (ABS) is still missing from Yamaha R15 V3. This was one of the most-expected features on R15 Version 3. As per the latest details available, Yamaha will launch the ABS model of R15 V3 in India by February 2019.

11) Dimensions

R15 V3 is 20mm longer, 55mm wider and 65mm taller than the present generation model. The Version 3 has gained 3 kg of additional weight while 15mm of rise in seat height was seen in this transition.

Yamaha offer 170 mm of ground clearance on third generation model (V3) while V2 is good for 160 mm. The fuel tank now measures 11 liters while the use of different design also brings change to the sitting position. The flat top of the fuel tank is inspired from bigger R series motorcycles.

KTM 125 Duke vs Yamaha R15S: KTM 125 Duke is now available in India for INR 1.18 lakh. The closest rival to the price point, Yamaha R15-S, is available for INR 1.17 lakh. Both the bikes support different body type but performance runs in their DNA from the very first day.

KTM is offering segment-first features like USD front forks, all-digital console and 150-section rear tyre for the most affordable motorcycle. On the other hand, Yamaha R15-S comes with dual headlights and full body fairing. The 124.7cc, single cylinder engine on the KTM is good for 14.5 PS while R15 uses a bigger 149cc engine that is good for 17 PS.

A bigger 3 Nm of difference comes in torque value of both the bikes. Yamaha is offering a smaller 267mm front disc brake while KTM brings 300mm front disc with ABS as standard. The fans for both brands are strict and they may not favor the idea of switching between a streetfighter or vice versa.

Both the motorcycles are seen with rear monoshock, sporty seating position and a lot of brand value. Yamaha will introduce the sportbike lineup with ABS in the coming months. KTM could have missed the ABS option but they preferred safety over price reduction for Duke 125.

Jawa 300 vs Royal Enfield Bullet 350: Jawa 300 is a direct rival to the Royal Enfield Bullet 350, with both brands having decade old rivalry through their two-stroke products. Jawa 300 is powered by a 293cc, single-cylinder engine producing 27 BHP and 28 Nm while Royal Enfield uses a 346cc engine producing 19.8 BHP and 28 Nm of torque.

Jawa uses a refined 6-speed gearbox while Bullet 350 comes with a 5-speed gearbox. Fans were expecting a similar exhaust tone from Jawa 300 but BS6 level refinement and other changes resulted in a superbike style high rev sound for the motorcycle. When idle, the sound is quite impressive. You can check out the Jawa exhaust sound video here.

Royal Enfield comes with the same iconic thump but the intensity has also gone down due to the new engine construction. The Bullet 350 can be had in either dual disc variant or the ES version with an electric starter.

Both the brands have a niche fan following and those entering the biking community for the first time will prefer getting the ABS-equipped Jawa 300 for safer riding. However, Royal Enfield will also launch a dual-channel ABS variant (better than Jawa’s single-channel unit) in the coming weeks. The tires are better on the Jawa 300 and it comes out to be lighter too.

KTM is expanding gradually, not just taking care of the riders who demand more power, but also bringing restricted power and impressive designing into consideration. The launch of KTM Duke 125 at INR 1.18 lakh, along with the introduction of updated Duke 200 at INR 1.60 lakh, has made their lineup more fulfilling than ever. Both the bikes are seen with 1-channel ABS for more confident amateur riding.

The flagship KTM Duke 390 already came with all the goodies, sharing its basic design with the quarter-liter streetfighter. It is priced at INR 2.44 lakh, using Metzeler tires, better TFT digital console, LED headlight, ride-by-wire and bigger 320mm front disc brake as exclusive options. On the other hand, the 250 Duke is using a unique headlight, along with similar exhaust and basic design lines as Duke 390.

The price for KTM Duke 250 ABS is yet to become official, with an expected tag of INR 1.90 lakh for the machine. This will still keep INR 30,000 worth difference from the Duke 200 and even bigger INR 54,000 of gap with the Duke 390. It means that those looking for the Duke 390 styling can save this amount by compromising on power while fans of Duke 200 can also save INR 42,000 by getting Duke 125.

Power is not always the first priority of a large section of buyers and availability of KTM 125 Duke and 250 Duke will definitely help buyers realize their design dreams within a fixed budget. If seen practically, the powerful output of Duke 125 is good enough to pull away from the city traffic and ride comfortably at around 80-90 kph. All bikes are available with similar tire size, with first three options getting MRF rubber.

KTM 125 Duke vs Yamaha R15 V3: KTM 125 Duke is a pure streetfighter and it was recently launched in India with a price tag of INR 1.18 lakh (ex-showroom). It is equipped with features like ABS and USD forks, making it the first 125cc motorcycle in India to get these 2 features. Unlike the regular 125cc bikes with no performance expectations, the KTM 125 Duke is good for 14.5 PS of maximum power and 12 Nm of torque.

The engine comes with a 6-speed gearbox, leaving behind slipper clutch for effective placement. Yamaha R15 V3 is not a direct rival to KTM 125 Duke, but getting this impressive machine for INR 1.27 lakh can confuse first time motorcycle buyers within both options. The name KTM excites sporty senses while Yamaha R15 helped Indian buyers understand the concept of supersport riding.

The 155.1cc engine comes with VVA for better power delivery, producing 19.3 PS of power and 15 Nm of torque for the racer. It is definitely faster and comes with a slipper clutch for easy operation of the gearbox. Still, those looking for added safety will consider Duke 125 for the 1-channel ABS.

Also, Yamaha skipped the USD forks from the Indonesian version for the telescopic ones while Duke 125 retains the exact components as the bigger Duke. The tire size is also more influential on the most affordable Duke (110 front and 150-section rear tire) of all time.

As buyers will prefer going for Yamaha R15 Version 3.0 for its easy availability, Aprilia RS 150 is also a potential product that one could think about owning when it launches in India in 2020. Here are some points that can help you clear your double thoughts regarding Yamaha R15 V3 and Aprilia RS 150.

# Design & Styling

Yamaha R15 Version 3.0 is a clean departure from V1 and V2 design language, bringing motoGP M1 style flat fuel tank and thinner front lights. The highest level of interest was to make it aerodynamically more efficient and internally more powerful. Aprilia RS 150 is a downsized version of RSV4 RR, helping it attain the showstopper profile successfully. It seems like Aprilia built this 150cc bike on the frame and panels from RS 125.

# Component List

Aprilia RS 150 is a clear winner here with addition of USD forks and 2-channel ABS over the available features on Yamaha R15 Version 3.0. The Italian marque has not yet confirmed that it will bring exactly the same product to India. Still, it seems they will localize more and keep the premium features alive for a good plus point. As the Indian government has it mandatory for all 125cc+ bikes to be equipped with ABS by April 1 next year, Yamaha will soon launch the ABS model of R15 V3 in India.

Yamaha played it safe by skipping the USD forks and launched the R15 V3 for INR 1.25 lakh in India (updated price is INR 1.27 lakh). Aprilia is expected to charge a premium of around INR 15,000 as their sportbike is equipped with USD forks and 2-channel ABS. The RS 150 is expected to be priced around INR 1.40 lakh (ex-showroom) when it will launch in India in 2020.

KTM 125 Duke vs TVS Apache RTR 200 (Quick Comparison): In terms of price, the TVS Apache RTR 200 is another segment rival for newly launched KTM 125 Duke. As both bikes have a huge displacement difference, the choice-making process becomes easier for different types of riders.

Apache RTR 200 is priced at INR 1,10,805 for the ABS variant while latter commands a price tag of INR 1,18,000 (ex-showroom Delhi). The basic consideration is the use of USD front forks on the Duke and powerful 200cc motor on the Apache RTR 200. Apart from this, both bikes use fully-digital console, dual disc brakes and typical streetfighter design language. Also, the KTM 125 Duke benefits for the wide front and rear tyres.

The 125cc engine on the most affordable Duke is good for 14.5 PS of power and 12 Nm of torque. In comparison, the carburetor-fed engine on Apache 200 is good for 20.5 PS and 18.1 Nm. The former comes with a 6-speed gearbox while latter is available with a 5-speed gearbox.

TVS Apache is available with 130-section rear tyre while Duke 125 features 150-section rubber for the premium feel. The headlight stays halogen on both the models, getting LED option on bigger Apache RR 310 and KTM 390 Duke. The price difference of INR 7,195 is considerable for those with tight budget and higher power requirement.
