Yamaha R15 V3 vs R15 V2: Yamaha R15 Version 3.0 is available in India for INR 1.40 lakh (ex-showroom India). It is the most powerful version for this lightweight SuperSport series as none other variants could even reach the power output that is offered in the stock version of Yamaha R15 V3. In fact, the list of changes in the third version is huge, covering nearly every aspect of the motorcycle after such a long time.

Yamaha R15 V3 vs R15 V2

1) Design & Style

The departure from the design language of R15 Version 2 is pretty clear on all sides. The new motorcycle is highly inspired by flagship Yamaha R1 and race-spec R6 as one could see the design elements that are shared between three of them. Yamaha R15 Version 3.0 is more upright while R15 V2 is more like the old school race designs that went extinct with the launch of next-generation R1. The fuel tank now feels much bigger in size while capacity is still 1 litre less than the original version.

2) Headlight Design & Layout

Yamaha R15 V3 vs R15 V2

Here comes the next big thing for Yamaha R15. The third generation motorcycle comes with twin LED headlights when compared to those huge twin halogen units on R15 V2. New headlights are sleek, helping the designers save more space for air channelling and weight reduction.

The next generation face was even not possible without these headlights as the pointy nose of R15 V2 is now replaced with mature and aerodynamically more efficient facial expressions. Being LEDs, they were supposed to have a more powerful overall throw but as per most of the owners, the headlight intensity of R15 V3 is poor in comparison the R15 V2.

3) Engine, Power & Torque

Yamaha R15 Version 3.0 carries the most powerful of all 150cc engines available internationally. The 155.1cc, single cylinder, liquid cooled and fuel injected motor is good for 19.3 HP at 10,000 rpm and 14.7 Nm at 8,500 rpm. The engine comes mated to a 6-speed gearbox. If compared to the R15 V2 (17 HP and 15 Nm), the values for R15 V3 are highly satisfying. A rider’s personal video in Indonesia has claimed 144 kph of top speed (as per the speedometer) for the YZF-R15 V3.

Max. Torque 14.7 Nm @ 8500 rpm 15.0 Nm @ 7500 rpm

4) Assist & Slipper Clutch

The 6-speed gearbox on Yamaha R15 Version 3 is paired to slipper clutch for better on-track performance. The other name for slipper clutch is back torque limiter, briefly explaining the function of this equipment through these three words only. It does not just eliminate the effect of engine braking during deceleration, the freewheel mechanism helps the rear wheel stay in place and keeps the required traction alive. Whenever the rear wheel tries to push the engine over its own limit, the clutch disengages itself to save the rider as well as motorcycle from the resulting loss.

5) Variable Valves Actuation (VVA)

Yamaha R15 Version 3 is equipped with VVA technology. It stands for Variable Valve Actuation. It is a technology that selects intake cam lobes for low speed and high-speed range. A certain rpm is considered as the shifting point (6000 rpm in this case) and that results in linear acceleration on both the ends. That helps the rider enjoy the feel of getting an equal ratio of power on both low end and the top end of the rev range. If we remove VVA from the setup, one would surely feel the need of riding above a certain rpm limit as most riders of the R15 V2 feel in real-world driving conditions.

6) Suspension

Yamaha R15 V3 vs R15 V2

The 2019 model of Yamaha R15 comes with standard telescopic forks for the Indian market. USD forks were limited to the Indonesian model only. The benefits of upside-down forks include improved handling, longer slider for more reliability and added rigidness to stay alive after hard braking on high capacity motorcycles. The motorcycle stops when we brake but all of the impacts go right into the suspension as it is the connecting part between the tire and rest of the body. All of the body weight pushes the suspension to the opposite direction on a bike.

7) Instrument Console

Yamaha R15 V2 has one of the most beautiful consoles among all bikes in India. Still, it lacks a lot of features when compared to arch rivals and that resulted in the use of a fully digital instrument console on the third-generation model. The console on V3 now comes with features like instantaneous mileage, average fuel used, gear shift indicator, digital tachometer, and VVA indicator. It is easy to read and has dedicated odometer, trip-meter and a large speed display in the middle. One can see the digital fuel indicator on the extreme right side.

8) Shades

Yamaha R15 V2 is known for its gloss filled shades from its initial days of launch. They have been actively playing with colours from almost one decade as every year, a couple of new shades were found for the motorcycle. This time, Yamaha R15 Version 3.0 is offered with Racing Blue, Thunder Grey, and Darknight as their shades.

9) Tyres

Yamaha R15 V3 use better tires when compared to the present version. The front measures 100/80-17 while rear used on V3 is massive 140/70-17. This adds more traction to R15 as a newly developed high-performance engine sends much more power to the rear wheel in comparison to the old version. R15 V2 comes with 90/80-17 and 130/70-17 tires at front and rear respectively. Wider tire, along with its wider sidewall helps the motorcycle absorb bumps in a better way on R15 V3. The brake, tire and suspension combination enhances the overall performance of this motorcycle.

10) Brakes

Yamaha is using bigger 282mm front and 220mm rear disc brake with ABS on R15 V3. This combination is much more effective than 267mm and 220mm brakes on the V2, that too without ABS. The increase in surface area facilitates better braking on the new bike.

11) Dimensions

R15 V3 is 20mm longer, 55mm wider and 65mm taller than the present generation model. Version 3 has gained 6 kg of additional weight while 15mm of rise in seat height was seen in this transition. Yamaha offers 170 mm of ground clearance on the third-generation model (V3) while V2 is good for 160 mm. The fuel tank now measures 11 liters while the use of different design also brings change to the sitting position. The flat top of the fuel tank is inspired by bigger R series motorcycles.

12) Ex-showroom Price

Yamaha R15 V2 was priced at INR 1,18,800 while the R15-S carried a price tag of INR 1.17 lakh. Both the models have now been discontinued in India. The long list of additions makes the new R15 V3 good for INR 1.40 lakh worth price tag. The R15 V3 Darknight edition (Matte Black) is available in India for INR 1.42 lakh. It is undoubtedly the most powerful 150cc bike that one can buy in 2019.

Suzuki Gixxer SF 250 vs Bajaj Dominar 400 (Quick Comparison): The recently launched Suzuki Gixxer SF 250 is one direct rival to the Bajaj Dominar 400. Although, the body type and engine displacement have a different story to narrate, the price difference of just INR 3000 is good enough to discuss both the products simultaneously. The new Suzuki SF 250 is good for 26.5 HP whereas Dominar proves fatal to the rivals with 40 HP of maximum output. However, the weight difference is very huge, with Gixxer getting a benefit of 23kg in direct comparison.

Suzuki Gixxer SF 250
Suzuki Gixxer SF 250

The high torque value (35 Nm) of the Dominar can effortlessly pull this weight from standstill to 100 kph in less than 8 seconds. The top speed benefit also goes to the Dominar, with riders getting more aerodynamic comfort on the Gixxer SF 250. The engine size difference is quite considerable between both the options. The Dominar benefits from upside down forks and more informative console. However, the styling of the Suzuki motorcycle is eye-popping for sure. Here is a quick technical specification comparison between the Suzuki Gixxer SF 250 and the Bajaj Dominar 400.

Suzuki Gixxer SF 150 vs Hero Xtreme 200S (Quick Comparison): Suzuki Gixxer SF 150 is priced at INR 1.10 lakh, making it more expensive than the full-faired Hero Xtreme 200S by a considerable margin. The former comes with an air-cooled 154.9cc engine while the latter can be had with a bigger 199.6cc motor and a value-for-money price tag of INR 98,500. The power difference between both the bikes is huge enough to claim the Xtreme as the powerful one in no time.

The weight difference is also negligible when considering the fact that the 200S produces 4.3 HP of more power. Both the engines are available with a 5-speed gearbox and thus, highway riding will feel great at double-digit speeds than the triple-digit speed riding fun of the bigger bikes. Here is a quick comparison between the Suzuki Gixxer SF 150 and Hero Xtreme 200S.

Suzuki Gixxer SF 150 vs Yamaha R15 V3 (Quick Comparison): The newly launched Suzuki Gixxer SF 150 is one direct rival to the Yamaha R15 Version 3, with both the options supporting a full-faired design and impressive power output values. The gap in power is huge here as the Gixxer SF 150 generates 14.1 HP of maximum power at 8000 rpm, while the R15 V3 is the most-powerful 150cc segment bike in India, as it develops 19.3 HP of maximum power at 10,000 rpm.

The most happening product of the 150cc segment, R15 V3 comes with dual channel ABS while the Gixxer SF 150 comes with a single channel ABS unit. Both the engines are available with fuel injection while air-cooling restricts the efficiency of the 154.9cc engine on the SF 150. The gap of INR 30,000 is totally performance-specific as those looking for looks can fall for the Gixxer SF 150 easily.

Suzuki Gixxer SF 150 vs Gixxer SF 250 (Quick Comparison): The recently launched Suzuki Gixxer SF 150 and SF 250 may fall in two different segments but in actual terms, they are based on the same platform with a limited number of differences that can attract more buyers for the affordable version.

The Gixxer SF 250 is using an oil-cooled engine with 26.5 HP of output while the SF 150 is available with an air-cooled engine and 14.1 HP of maximum power. When equating the weight gap of just 15kg, the high power output of SF 250 makes it a great option for performance lovers. The headlight, taillight, instrument console, and the fuel tank design remains similar on both the models.

Suzuki Gixxer SF 150
Suzuki Gixxer SF 150

On the other hand, the tire section is different on both the bikes, with Gixxer SF 250 getting wider tires and better disc brakes than the smaller model. The alloy wheel design is also different as Suzuki retained the old design on the SF 150. As far as the ABS is concerned, the SF 150 is equipped with a 1-channel ABS unit while the SF 250 comes with a 2-channel ABS unit.

The most powerful option in the quarter-litre segment is KTM Duke 250 with 30 HP of output and thus, 26.5 HP feels decent in comparison to the indirect rival. Suzuki will definitely offer a naked version of the SF 250 and one can clearly assume the high current-gen price tag to justify the placement of their streetfighter.

Suzuki Gixxer SF 250
Suzuki Gixxer SF 250

The Gixxer SF 150 is available for INR 1.10 lakh while the SF 250 can be bought for INR 1.71 lakh. The prices mentioned here ex-showroom Delhi. Another visual difference between both the full-faired sportbikes is the exhaust finish, keeping a different design for the dual exhaust exits for exclusivity.

The side fairing is very neat and see-through space is limited on the 250cc, along with the golden engine cover in comparison to the black one on SF 150. As both the bikes are available in two shades (Silver and Black), finding the difference is very hard in black colour option. However, the silver shade comes with a black fender for the 150cc model and a body-coloured fender for the 250cc Gixxer SF.

Suzuki Gixxer SF 250 vs Yamaha Fazer 25 (Quick Comparison): Suzuki Gixxer SF 250 is a direct and the most happening rival to the not-so-popular Fazer 25 from Yamaha. However, the value for money factor served by the Blue machine stays intact as Suzuki has priced the Gixxer SF 250 at INR 1.71 lakh, which is definitely on the higher side in comparison to the features on offer. The updated ABS model of the Yamaha Fazer 250 is available for INR 1.43 lakh (ex-showroom), making it affordable by INR 28,000 in comparison to the SF 250.

Suzuki Gixxer SF 250

The Gixxer SF 250 is much more powerful while Yamaha has worked hard to keep the weight under check for a competitive ride. Suzuki also offers wider tires on their motorcycle while rest all details are almost similar in both the bikes.

The digital instrument console of the Gixxer SF 250 looks much better and bigger as the Yamaha Fazer 25 is available with a basic digital console with smaller-than-usual screen size. However, the dual-channel ABS is seen as standard on both the bikes for optimum levels of safety for the rider in all conditions. Here is quick specification comparison between the Suzuki Gixxer SF 250 and the Yamaha Fazer 25.

Suzuki Gixxer SF 250 vs Bajaj Pulsar RS200 (Quick Comparison): Suzuki has officially launched the Gixxer SF 250 in India with an ex-showroom price tag of INR 1.71 lakh. The full-faired sports bike has an indirect rival waiting straight on the road in the form of Bajaj Pulsar RS200. The engine displacement is different for both the bikes but still, the pricing for the new quarter-litre Suzuki model makes the fact sure that nobody will miss the RS200 from the rival list. Both the bikes have an ex-showroom price difference of around INR 30,000.

The flagship Pulsar claims 141 kph of top speed and thus, can easily take on motorcycles with higher displacement in a drag race. However, Suzuki has made the new Gixxer SF lighter than ever, making the Pulsar feel heavier on the paper too. The best part for the 200cc racer is its 24.5 HP of output that seems higher than any other sports bike except the KTM RC 200.

Bajaj Pulsar RS200

Gixxer SF 250 is using an oil-cooled 249cc engine, good for 26.5 HP and 22.6 Nm. The high torque guarantees smooth riding experience, further improved by the 6-speed gearbox. All other Gixxer models from the 155cc lineup are seen with a 5-speed gearbox. The SF 250 offers fuel injection and an estimated top speed of 150 kph. The mileage for Gixxer SF 250 and the Pulsar RS200 falls around 35-40 kmpl. Here is a quick comparison for both the full-faired motorcycles.

The recently launched motorcycle seems to be slightly overpriced as we were expecting it to get an ex-showroom price tag of around INR 1.50 lakh.

The most talked-about rival for the Gixxer SF 250 is the Honda CBR250R, with both bikes having an equal overall power output of 26.5 HP. The torque value is slightly different while the Gixxer SF 250 produces both the values at 500 rpm higher than the current-gen CBR250R.

Honda offers liquid cooling and fuel injection while SF 250 is available with oil cooler and fuel injection. The cost-cutting may be visible on the Suzuki motorcycle in terms of engine components while ABS used here is dual channel. Also, the lighting is LED and further saves power consumption on the motorcycle. Suzuki Gixxer SF 250 is lighter by 6 kg, helping the brand claim a powerful position in terms of power-to-weight ratio on the paper. Here is a quick comparison between the newly launched Gixxer SF 250 and the Honda CBR250R.
