Aprilia officially unveiled the all-new GPR 250 sportbike in China back in September 2019. In terms of design and styling, the 250cc motorcycle is inspired by the litre-class RSV4 series of superbikes. It is expected that the Aprilia GPR 250 will be showcased at the Auto Expo to gauge the public response while the sports bike is expected to launch in the Indian market after 4-6 months.

The Aprilia GPR 250 is powered by a 249.2cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine that is capable to generate a maximum power of 26.5HP @ 9000 rpm and a peak torque of 22Nm @ 7500 rpm. The engine is mated to a 6-speed gearbox. The sportbike weighs just 150kgs, so we can expect it to deliver an impressive performance in comparison to the rival 250cc motorcycles.

The braking duties on the motorcycle are handled by a 300mm single disc brake at the front and a disc brake at the rear. The brand has not yet revealed the rear disc size. Like the rest of the 250cc bikes available in India, the Aprilia GPR 250 will also come equipped with a 2-channel ABS as standard. As far as the suspension is concerned, the sportbike is equipped with USD (upside-down) front forks and an adjustable monoshock at the rear end.

In terms of dimensions, the Aprilia GPR 250 measures 1950mm in length, 770mm in width, and 1100mm in height. The wheelbase and the fuel tank of the motorcycle stand at 1350mm and 14-litres respectively. The 250cc sportbike is equipped with a 130/70-R17 rear tyre and a 100/80-R17 tyre at the front end. Some of the key highlights of the GPR 250 include a perimeter frame, a semi-digital instrument console, clip-on handlebars, an underbelly exhaust, and an aluminium swingarm.

When launched in India, the Aprilia GPR 250 would be competing with the likes of the Honda CBR250R, KTM RC 200, Suzuki Gixxer SF 250, and the TVS Apache RR 310. In terms of pricing, the GPR 250 is expected to get an ex-showroom price tag of around INR 2.20 lakh.

According to recent reports, Piaggio is planning to launch a new motorcycle range in the 250cc-300cc segment in the Indian market. The Italian brand previously planned on experimenting with the 150cc motorcycle segment though the increasing market share and the trend for the quarter-litre motorcycles have made them change paths.

The brand showcased the 150cc Aprilia RS 150 and the Tuono 150 at the 2018 Auto Expo though the motorcycles never made it to the showrooms. The brand now plans on launching higher-displacement sports bikes in India. The reports also suggest that the upcoming motorcycles will get the Aprilia branding in the Indian market considering its larger and younger fan base.

Must-Know Facts about the Aprilia GPR 250 Sportbike
5 Must-Know Facts about the Aprilia GPR 250 Sportbike

Commenting on the plans to launch higher-displacement motorcycles, Diego Graffi, MD Piaggio stated – “Definitely, we are looking with a lot of interest at the motorcycle segment in India. It is natural, having a brand like Aprilia, which is well known across the world for winning in racing competitions. We are now looking more at this range (250cc-300cc). We need some time to introduce the products, but it is in our plans.”

With overall sales near 7,73,855 units in the 2019 fiscal year, the 250cc-350cc motorcycle segment has been doing good for the brands where Royal Enfield certainly takes over 99% of the market share with 7,64,012 units sold in the same period. Piaggio has stated its plans on launching new Aprilia products in the same segment, though the production might take some time.

In addition to this, Piaggio is all set to launch a new India-specific scooter in the markets shortly. The brand further aims at reaching 1 lakh sales figure in the current year. The Vespa and the Aprilia range of scooters have recently been updated by the brand with BS6-compliant engines. In addition to that, the brand has also launched the Aprilia SR 160 that replaces the SR 150 in the Indian markets. The bookings for the updated scooter portfolio from the brand has begun at the selected dealerships.

Powering the Aprilia Tuono 660 concept motorcycle is the same 660cc parallel twin-cylinder, liquid-cooled, DOHC engine that is capable to generate a maximum power of 45.5HP for the standard variant subjected for the use of young riders while the high-power variant is expected to generate around 95HP of maximum power.

Aprilia RS 250 SP small-displacement racing machine has been recently unveiled by the brand at the EICMA 2019. The motorcycle has been specifically developed by the brand in collaboration with Ohvale, the Italian manufacturer of mini race bikes. Featuring all the traits of a racing machine, the RS 250 SP is an Ohvale look alike. The all-new motorcycle from Aprilia will participate in the Italian FMI Aprilia Sport Production Championship in 2020, which will be a six-race affair.

Commenting on the unveiling of the racing machine, Massimo Rivola, CEO of Aprilia Racing stated – “The new championship takes up a tradition that makes Aprilia unique, a brand that has taken generations of young people onto the track and that has raised great champions,”

“From 2020, thanks to the partnership with the Federation, we will once again be providing fun for young people who, in this championship, will find a way to make their dreams come true and perhaps, this is our wish, the start of a path in the world of competitive motorcycling.”

“This is why we have designed an easy bike and formula that will attract the highest number of young people to competitive motorcycling.”

Being christened as the ideal racing motorcycle for the younger audience, the Aprilia RS 250 SP will be one of the cheapest racing bikes suitable for youth and for competing in the championships. The brand has equipped the motorcycle with premium components such as brakes with Brembo callipers, Ohlins suspension, loud exhaust from SC-Project, and 17-inch Marchesini wheels with Pirelli tyres.

The Aprilia RS 250 SP racing motorcycle will be equipped with an Aprilia-based engine though, all the production units will be manufactured by Ohvale, which will ultimately price it under €10,000 (approx 7.85 lakhs).

Though targeted for youth, the Aprilia RS 250 SP is highly unlikely to be available in India, being a track-only race bike. As per the reports, the Indian market will be graced with Aprilia GPR 250, which has been recently launched in China.

Powering the India-bound GPR 250 is a 249.2cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine that is capable to generate a maximum power of 26.5HP @ 9000 rpm and a peak torque of 22Nm @ 7500 rpm. The engine is mated to a 6-speed gearbox. The Aprilia GPR 250 is expected to get an ex-showroom price tag of around INR 2.20 lakh.

The production-ready variant of the Aprilia RS660 has been recently revealed at the EICMA 2019 auto show. With best-in-class power-to-weight ratio, the all-new 600cc-segment fully-faired machine is expected to be a big turnaround for the middle-weight motorcycle segment.

Coming to the design language, the production-spec variant of the motorcycle gets the same looks as seen on the prototype model. The aggressive and edgy LED-headlight setup offers it a beast look while the 3-tone colour combination accentuates its unique profile. The brand has equipped the motorcycle with its latest electronics package including a six-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU).

The electric suite offers the motorcycle with traction control, cruise control, cornering ABS, five riding modes, up/down quick-shifter, wheelie control, and engine braking system.

The Aprilia RS660 was initially unveiled as a concept at the EICMA 2018 and in comparison to the concept model, the production variant of the motorcycle now features a raised handlebar unit which replaces the aggressive handlebar setup revealed at the event last year.

The LED headlights have been mated to LED DRLs in addition to turn-indicators. The brand has further equipped the production variant of the motorcycle with a 5-inch, full-colour TFT display with Bluetooth Connectivity and GPS aid.

Coming to the rear profile, the concept variant of the motorcycle featured a sharper tail section in addition to a single-seat setup inspired from the Aprilia RSV4 though, the production variant of the motorcycle features a dual seat setup with a svelte tail section.

Coming to the suspension, the brand has offered the motorcycle with fully adjustable 41mm Kayaba forks at the front while the rear has been equipped with a monoshock unit. The braking duties are handled by disc brakes at either side with Brembo callipers as standard.

Powering the Aprilia RS660 is an RSV4 1100-inspired 660cc 2-cylinder engine that is capable of generating a maximum power figure of 100HP. The rider can further operate the motorcycle in 5 riding modes, three for street and the remaining two for the track.

The sportbike will be made available to the customers sometime in the year 2020 though the pricing details have not yet been revealed by the brand. Once launched in the Indian market, the Aprilia RS660 will compete with the likes of Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R and the all-new Triumph Daytona 765.

Aprilia GPR 150 vs Honda CBR150R (Quick Comparison): Aprilia GPR 150 and Honda CBR150R are two impressive lightweight racers that the Indian market can get in 2020. The former was spotted in India a few months ago at a dealer event, hinting that Aprilia is planning to enter the popular 150cc motorcycle segment as early as possible.

In terms of looks, the Aprilia GPR 150 is different in comparison to the model (RS 150) showcased at the Auto Expo 2018, as it is based on a China-spec 150cc Aprilia sportbike. Honda CBR150R is yet to make an official entry into India, either through a test mule or a model that can be showcased to the dealers to gauge the response.

The performance values of both the bikes are highly comparable, with CBR getting benefits of its lightweight body while GPR 150 bringing higher overall power output. The tyre size, rear brake size, and 2-channel ABS stay same on both the models. The torque output is higher on the CBR150R. Here is a quick comparison between Aprilia GPR 150 and the Honda CBR150R.

Aprilia RS 150 vs Yamaha R15 V3: At present, the Yamaha R15 Version 3.0 is available in India for INR 1.41 lakh while the Aprilia RS 150 was showcased to gauge customer interest at the Auto Expo in February 2018. As buyers will prefer going for Yamaha R15 V3 for its easy availability, the Aprilia RS 150 is also a potential product that one could think about owning when it launches in India in 2020. Here are some points that can help you clear your double thoughts regarding Yamaha R15 V3 and Aprilia RS 150.

Aprilia RS 150 made its Global Debut in India at the Auto Expo in February 2018

Aprilia RS 150 vs Yamaha R15 V3

1) Design and Styling: Yamaha R15 Version 3.0 is a clean departure from V1 and V2 design language, bringing MotoGP M1 style flat fuel tank and thinner front lights. The highest level of interest was to make it aerodynamically more efficient and internally more powerful.

Aprilia RS 150 is a downsized version of RSV4 RR, helping it attain the showstopper profile successfully. It seems like Aprilia built this 150cc bike on the frame and panels from RS 125. Another theory claims that the GPR 150 will serve as the base for India-spec RS 150.

2) Engine & Performance: Yamaha R15 Version 3.0 is powered by a 155.1cc engine producing 19.3 HP of maximum power and 14.7 Nm of peak torque. On the other hand, the Aprilia RS 150 uses a 150cc engine producing 18 HP of power and 14 Nm of torque. The output values are better in R15 while the wet weight will further decide which one out of these two gets the best power-to-weight ratio.

3) Component List: Aprilia RS 150 is a clear winner here with the addition of USD forks along with a 2-channel ABS unit in comparison to the available features on the Yamaha R15 Version 3.0. The Italian marque has not yet confirmed that it will bring exactly the same product to India though, it seems like the brand will localize more and keep the premium features alive for a good plus point. As the Indian government has made it mandatory for all 125cc+ bikes to be equipped with ABS, the Aprilia RS 150 will arrive with standard ABS for sure.

4) Pricing: Yamaha played it safe by skipping the USD forks and launched the R15 V3 ABS for INR 1.39 lakh in India. After the recent price hike, the sportbike is now available at INR 1.41 lakh (ex-showroom). Aprilia is expected to charge a premium of around INR 7,000-8,000 as their sportbike is equipped with USD front forks. The RS 150 is expected to be priced around INR 1.50 lakh (ex-showroom).

Coming to the suspension, the brand is expected to offer the motorcycle in two variants, the higher-spec variant will feature Ohlins suspension though the standard variant is expected to get components from Sachs. Similarly, Brembo disc brakes setup will also be different for both variants.

Powering the Aprilia RS660 will be the RSV4 1100-inspired 660cc, V-twin engine while the power and torque figures have not been revealed as of yet. The motorcycle is expected to feature ride-by-wire throttle technology in addition to getting various riding modes.

The sportbike will be made available to the customers sometime in the next year. Once launched in the Indian market, the Aprilia RS660 will compete with the likes of Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R and the all-new Triumph Daytona 765.

Aprilia GPR 250 sportbike has been recently launched in China. Inspired by the litre-class RSV4 series of superbikes, the all-new motorcycle is expected to be officially unveiled in India at the Auto Expo 2020  while the brand is likely to launch the motorcycle in the Indian market by the end of next year. Here are five must-know facts about the Aprilia GPR 250.

Aprilia GPR 250 Sportbike Facts

1. Inspired by Aprilia RSV4 Superbike – The fully-faired design equipped with modern safety features, the Aprilia GPR 250 resembles the RSV4 when it comes to styling as well as premium looks. The race-inspired livery on the fairing further compliments its superbike stance while the sporty genes make it one of the best competitors out there in its segment.

2. Technical specifications – The Aprilia GPR 250 is powered by 249.2cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine that is good for a maximum power of 26.5 HP at 9000 rpm and a peak torque of 22 Nm at 7500 rpm. The engine comes mated to a 6-speed transmission. The sportbike is expected to offer a mileage of around 35-40 kmpl while the top speed will scale at 150 kmph or above.

In addition to this, the disc brake set up at either end has been mated to a dual-channel ABS unit for additional safety. The motorcycle features an aluminium swingarm while at the same time features a unique underbelly exhaust.

4. Semi-Digital Instrument Console – The Aprilia GPR 250 has been equipped with a semi-digital instrument panel. The 250cc sportbike features an analogue tachometer while the console offers adequate riding dynamics. The instrument console features a rectangular digital screen to display the speedometer, odometer, fuel gauge, clock, and more.

Aprilia GPR 150 vs Yamaha R15 V3 (Quick Comparison): The upcoming Aprilia GPR 150 (RS 150) is a direct rival to the Yamaha R15 V3 ABS. The lightweight motorcycle was seen for the first time in a production-ready guise at a dealer meeting in India, hinting at a launch event at the Auto Expo in February 2020.

The GPR 150 comes with 18HP of claimed power output and weighs lighter in comparison to the R15 V3. On the other hand, Yamaha will have a clear benefit of an extensive dealership network whereas the Piaggio group has more presence in the South Indian states.

Aprilia GPR 150 features USD forks and thus, pricing will stay premium in comparison to the R15 V3. The expected price gap between both the models will stay around INR 10,000.

Aprilia is using the China-based design for the Indian market, leaving behind the popular RS 125-inspired design that is on sale in the European countries. The most powerful bike of its segment, the Yamaha R15 V3 is good for 19.3HP of maximum output. Here is a quick comparison between the R15 V3 and the GPR 150.
