150cc Aprilia Sportbikes India Launch Put on Hold: A recent report from Moneycontrol has confirmed that the much-awaited Aprilia RS 150 and Tuono 150 are out of the priority product launch line as Piaggio will first bring the BS6-compliant scooters and electric vehicles for the country. Both the 150cc motorcycles are currently undergoing a feasibility study for an effective launch price. The Aprilia RS 150 and Tuono 150 will compete with the likes of Yamaha R15 V3 and MT-15 respectively.

150cc Aprilia Sportbikes India Launch Put on Hold Again

Aprilia currently has a remarkable number of SR-series scooters on the road and introducing a more refined BS6-compliant version will help them keep up their image as a premium sporty brand that cares for the environment. RS 150 and Tuono 150 will share the frame, engine, and every possible cycle part with each other, getting a difference of just body panels and handlebar for a unique look. The powerful engine is said to use fuel injection and liquid cooling to produce 18 HP of maximum power and 14 Nm of maximum torque.

Speaking to Moneycontrol, Diego Graffi, Managing Director and CEO, Piaggio Vehicles, said, “I can confirm that the interest for the segment and what would be the market opportunity for it here in India exists. The brand will be Aprilia (and) the kind of bike will be a premium, mid-range with an engine size between 150cc and 250cc. We are studying various options and are trying to find what would be the best offering at the time we will be entering the market.”

“At present, we do not have a fixed date. It has taken a little bit longer than what we had planned initially as we want to find the best trade-off between what is the expected price and what is the level of local content (in the bikes) we are introducing,” Graffi added.

Piaggio Group has officially launched its 125cc Aprilia Storm scooter in India at a price tag of INR 65,000 (ex-showroom). The scooter started reaching the dealerships a week ago while the price for the same has now been revealed officially at the brand’s social media handles. The newly launched Storm 125 was first showcased at Auto Expo 2018 and is priced below the already existing SR 125.

The 125cc Aprilia Storm scooter is regarded as one of the most affordable Italian two-wheelers in India that shares several characteristics with its elder sibling. The all-new Aprilia scooter will be available in Matte Red and the Matte Yellow colour options with bolder graphics at the front as well on the side panels.

The Aprilia Storm 125 features a dual tone paint scheme and gets 12-inch alloy wheels with fatter terrain tyres while the SR 125 features 14-inch alloy wheels. The scooter has been equipped with drum brakes at either end that is assisted by a Combi Braking System (CBS). The suspension duties are handled by hydraulic telescopic forks at the front while the rear gets hydraulic shock absorbers. The scooter gets Vee rubber tyres measuring 120/80 at the front and 130/80 at the rear.

Powering the Aprilia Storm 125 is SR 125 inspired 124.5cc, single-cylinder 3-valve engine capable of churning out a maximum power of 9.52 bhp at 7250 rpm and an utmost torque of 9.9 Nm at 6250 rpm. The engine comes mated to a CVT automatic gearbox.

In addition to the mechanical bits, the body works and the instrument console also remains identical to the SR 125. The 125cc Aprilia Storm scooter will be available at every Piaggio and Aprilia showroom. The all-new scooter will compete in the market with the likes of TVS Ntorq, Suzuki Burgman, and Honda Grazia in India.

Aprilia has finally launched its Storm 125 scooter in India with a price tag of INR 65,000. It is priced around INR 8000 less than the SR125 that is available for INR 72,790 (ex-showroom, Delhi). The most recent image of the scooter shows that it is available with drum brakes at both the ends. The production model has got some significant changes when compared to the Storm 125 model that was unveiled at the Auto Expo 2018.

It looks like Storm 125 is using 12-inch wheels, but their design is pretty similar to the 10-inch ones seen on the Vespa models in India. The wheels are paired to drum brakes that will come featured with CBS (Combined Braking System). It is still unknown whether the company will offer a front disc brake equipped model or not. The production model of the Storm 125 also has a pillion grab-rail and a white Aprilia logo instead of the red one as seen on the scooter when it was displayed for the first time.

Aprilia Storm 125 Scooter

The brand has made many changes to cut the production costs but thankfully they have not swapped out the Vee rubber off-road oriented tyres with regular tyres. The tyres measure 120/80 at the front and 130/80 at the rear, whereas the standard model of the SR sports 120/70 section rubber at both the ends. The Storm 125 also features bold graphics as seen on the scooter displayed at the Auto Expo last year.

Though, most of the components of the Storm 125 are identical to the SR 125 such as the bodywork, instrumentation, and lights. Mechanically, its power is most likely to come from the same single-cylinder, 3-valve air-cooled unit that is seen on the SR125. On the SR, it is good enough to produce 9.5HP of maximum power at 7250 rpm and 9.8 Nm of peak torque at 6250 rpm. The scooter would be competing in the Indian market with the likes of Honda Grazia, Suzuki Burgman, and the TVS Ntorq.

150cc Aprilia sports bike has successfully entered the prototype testing space, with first-round already finished and the brand is now working on other strategies to keep their product feasible at the time of launch. The report was recently made official by none other than the managing director and CEO of Piaggio Vehicles. The launch period for the new 150cc bikes is now said to be between 18 months.

That takes the overall waiting period a bit longer than usual but, the brand also cleared that studying the way other premium products are placed around this segment will help them with better pricing and equipment during the period of launch.

Aprilia RS 150
Aprilia RS 150

Here is what really came out in an interview with Autocar Professional: “We are studying our competitors and have done some prototype testing recently. If everything goes in the right direction we have planned, we should be able to launch the motorcycle in India in the next 18 months too,” Diego Graffi said, revealing the company’s aggressive new product strategy for the Indian market.

He admitted that “having a brand like Aprilia and not playing in the motorcycle market is unaffordable. It can help us expand our motorcycle portfolio as well as powertrain options, and thus, investing in Aprilia is a must.”

Aprilia Tuono 150
Aprilia Tuono 150

Aprilia is a popular motorcycle brand and missing their presence from the entry-level motorcycle segment made them vulnerable to losses that could have been well balanced by a different set of products. The 150cc Aprilia sports bike (RS 150 or GPR 150) will serve as the local production flagship model for the brand as they currently produce only scooters in the country.

Even when the availability of the litre-class RSV4 motorcycle helps them attain the premium image, only a lightweight single-cylinder machine can bring mass market numbers for the brand. The festive period of 2020 can be the best assumed time slot for Aprilia’s much-awaited launch.

SR125 was first introduced at Auto Expo 2018 and along with that, the brand also unveiled the Aprilia Storm 125 variant with off-road specific tyres and two new shades: matt yellow and matt red. The enhanced variant is almost ready to make an entry into the Indian market as a recently leaked image claims INR 65,000 as the ex-showroom price for Storm 125.

The launch of SR125 helped Aprilia place itself at an even more attractive price tag and get a wider customer base that prefers mileage over performance. SR125 helped fans with strict budget explore the possibility of the race inspired design of the SR series and the scooter now also comes with CBS as standard.

Aprilia Storm 125 looks identical to the SR 125 and it shares almost every basic component in its body. The colour options are different and it comes with off-road tyres when compared to the standard model. The SR 125 and Storm 125 carries a 124cc, single cylinder engine producing 9.5 HP at 7250 rpm and 9.9 Nm at 6250 rpm. The engine comes mated to an automatic gearbox while the scooter weighs just 122 kg.

SR 125 & Storm 125 comes with front telescopic forks while the rear uses single sided coil spring suspension. The engine is shared with 125cc Vespa scooters while the body design and material stay the same as the Aprilia SR 150. Different shades and sticker job guarantees the individual presence of both the scooters.

The Indian SR150’s engine is good for 10.4 HP and 11.4 Nm of torque. The best part of Aprilia SR 125 is its value for money approach, fetching buyers who were ready to get a new Honda Grazia or Suzuki Access 125 in the coming months. However, placing the same at this point saved them from equipment de-tuning and other cost-cutting measures.

A recent report in the automotive industry claims that the upcoming Aprilia RS660 will make an official debut with its production version at EICMA 2019. The lightweight machine is expected to arrive in India in 2020, using a powerful engine with values taking a direct competition to the output of Duke 790’s engine. The Aprilia RS660 was first seen at EICMA 2018 and now, the official photos of the concept motorcycle are out for the fans.

The brand will also debut the active aerodynamic technology with automatic adjustment of winglets through the model. However, this feature may stay exclusive to the track-spec race version. The motorcycle is equipped with Brembo brakes, front USD forks and much more as standard.

The new engine details are not completely official yet. Aprilia is using the 1100cc engine to carve out a twin-cylinder engine, clearly using two of its cylinders in the new RS660 SuperSport motorcycle. The engine is a gem, producing 105 HP of maximum power within a motorcycle that weighs just 160 kg.

The addition of electronic aids will further help in performance refinement, resulting in a champion that is cost effective, powerful and beautifully designed above all. Aprilia is yet to announce all the remaining details for the performance section. The light supersport chassis is another great part of the Aprilia RS660 SuperSport as the weight falls right in the category of lightweight 250cc bikes.

The front fascia of the concept uses dual headlight design in place of the iconic three headlights on Aprilia RSV4 and Tuono 1100. However, the centre connecting part clears that the brand will keep its iconic facial expressions alive on the model. The exhaust used here is compact, smart and totally in line with the design. The single seat design will definitely turn into a practical version in the production form of RS660 Concept.

BS6 Aprilia SR150 was recently spotted doing test rounds on the Indian roads. Aprilia has an influential design language for this scooter and keeping the same intact for the 2020 version is a good move. However, the test mule seen here supports the Storm paint scheme and carries the BS6 160 slip on the front body. The scooter comes with an attached windscreen and different set of tires in comparison to the present generation model of SR150. The visor can be an optional feature while tires may be switched from the Vee Rubber to MRF on the upcoming BS6 version.

BS6 Aprilia SR150
BS6 Aprilia SR150 Spotted Testing for the First Time

The manufacturers have approximately one year to convert all the possible engines that they wish to keep on sale into the BS6-compliant versions of themselves as orders from the authorities have clearly mentioned that no extension would be given to any segment of vehicles at any cost. Aprilia has already introduced CBS for under 125cc and ABS for above 125cc scooters in the Indian lineup. The 154.8cc, single cylinder engine on the BS4-compliant SR150 is good for 10.06 HP and 10.90 Nm. The engine comes mated to an automatic gearbox. The BS6-compliant version is expected to use fuel injection and thus, the difference in cost will definitely arrive.

BS6 Aprilia SR150

The weight may increase with the use of new parts in the engine and exhaust system, both playing an important role in the reduction of emissions from the scooter. The top speed of 104 kph may improve while mileage will definitely go up with lesser than ever wastage of fuel from the SR150. The Storm variant’s body may only be here as a disguise for the upcoming scooter as updating certain bits like the handlebar section will help Aprilia get an even better user base. The current generation SR series is available in standard, 125cc and Race variant in the country.

Aprilia RSV4 X, the limited edition tenth anniversary model from the Italian brand, has been launched for 39,900 Euros (INR 31 lakh approx). The RSV4 was launched ten years back and the production of RSV4 X will be limited to just 10 units. The motorcycle is available with 225 HP of maximum power and that too pulling just 165 kg of dry weight. The drop in weight comes through the use of lightweight carbon fiber fairing, resulting in 12 kg of an overall drop in comparison to the lightest RSV4 variant. The ECU has been tuned to bring the maximum performance out of the model, further getting an exclusive ANN (Aprilia No Neutral) gearbox for a reduction in chances of neutral while shifting.

The gear shift pattern has changed on the motorcycle resulting in the one-sided pattern where the neutral comes before the first and every other gear is changed in the same direction, unlike other bikes where neutral is placed in-between the first and second gear. Aprilia RSV4 X comes with forged magnesium wheels from Marchesini, sticky Pirelli tires, Brembo brake calipers and much more. The pricing mentioned here is a direct conversion from the Euro-spec price while getting the same for real will require almost double the price mentioned here.

Unlike some motorcycles that take a lot of time to be listed as sold out, Aprilia RSV4 X is expected to take just 24 hours to get sold out. The error avoiding mechanism of the motorcycle is great as sprinting fast requires precision to the highest level and ANN technology can help riders skip the fraction of a second that gets wasted during the shifts. The motorcycle rivals none other than BMW HP4 Race, Kawasaki Ninja H2 and Ducati V4 Speciale in the international market. The official bookings will start in the mid of April for the new RSV4 X.

A report regarding the Aprilia SR Max 160 scooter has unfolded another set of expectations from the performance-focused Italian brand. Dubbed as a maxi-scooter with dedicated comfort-enhancing properties, the scooter will share a lot with the current-gen model of SR 150. The report even cleared that Aprilia is expected to name the scooter 160 to improve brand presence while the engine used on the new scooter will stay the same 155cc unit. Also, the one example of the Aprilia SR Max 300 spotted in the country could serve as the face for their new scooter. As the popularity of Suzuki Burgman Street is about to touch a new milestone, Aprilia could have a perfect plan to counter the same.

Aprilia SR Max 160
Aprilia SR Max 160 is Expected to be Based on SR Max 300

The frame from SR 150, along with its engine can save a lot of money for the brand while panels from the SR Max 300 can serve as a new body for the Aprilia scooter. The localization of the components will leave them with just a search for the vendors who can create the magic by manufacturing the same panel designs with a different set of mounting locations on the new frame. The most powerful factor for the new scooter will be its huge front fascia that can save the rider from upcoming winds and improve the comfort levels.

Aprilia SR Max 160 in the Making
Aprilia SR Max 160 in the Making; India Launch Next Year

SR Max 300 comes with a twin headlight design that is clearly inspired by superbikes and will increase the overall cost of the scooter. The front features telescopic suspension and huge alloy wheel in comparison to the SR 150. The engine and other components will be tuned by keeping the enlarged proportions in mind. Suzuki Burgman Street is well-placed as cost-cutting is clearly visible from every usable component. On the other hand, SR Max 160 (most probably the name for its maxi-scooter configuration) will use the cycle parts but may flaunt an all-new personality.

Aprilia RS 150 and Tuono 150 shocked everyone with their surprise entry at Auto Expo 2018. Both the machines are based on the same platform but carry different design language for pleasing different riding styles. Here are five must-know facts about the upcoming 150cc Aprilia duo.

150cc Aprilia Bikes
Aprilia RS 150

5 Fast Facts About 150cc Aprilia RS & Tuono

1) Design and Style

Replicas of 1000cc Aprilia Sport Bikes

The design is highly or you can say purely inspired by the litre-class Aprilia RSV4 and Tuono 1100. The scaled versions look perfect and deal with both sport and street bike lovers of India. Aprilia RS 150 is a perfect R15 rival while Tuono 150 comes with huge front fascia and exposed engine bay.

150cc Aprilia Bikes
Aprilia Tuono 150

2) Engine and Gearbox

Decent Amount of Power and Torque

Aprilia combo comes with a powerful 150cc, single cylinder, liquid cooled and fuel injected motor producing 18 HP at 10,000 rpm and 14 Nm at 7,500 rpm. This makes it the second most powerful option after Yamaha R15 Version 3.0. As they have not revealed the weight for both these bikes, the power-to-weight ratio can still surprise us.

3) Safety and Brakes

Comes with Standard 2-Channel ABS

Dual Channel ABS comes as standard on Aprilia RS 150 and Tuono 150. Unlike other bikes with optional single channel ABS, Aprilia will use dual channel unit through its 300mm front and 218mm rear disc. It will surely raise the pricing to some extent.

150cc Aprilia Bikes
Aprilia RS 150

4) Equipment

Dual Discs, USD Forks & Quick-Shifter

If Aprilia brings Upside Down forks as standard on both these models, this would make them the segment first options to carry such impressive performance enhancing feature. Setup of suspension is also expected to stay more track focused on Aprilia RS 150.

An optional quick-shifter on both these bikes would mean pro-level track spec riding experience for the buyers. It saves time between gear shifts and results in better use of the gearbox potential. Even the faired front section of Tuono 150 will help buyers stay away from wind blast.

5) Launch Details and Expected Price

India Launch to Happen in 2020

Aprilia recently made it clear that the launch of RS 150 & Tuono 150 won’t happen before 2020. Aprilia will manufacture these 2 bikes in India, so we can expect aggressive price tags for both the bikes. RS 150 would be priced around INR 1.50-1.60 lakhs and Tuono 150 at INR 1.40-1.50 lakhs (ex-showroom). Both sports bikes are expected to launch in India around May 2020.
