Yamaha R3 registered 20 units in the month of February 2019, clearly showing the effect of Kawasaki Ninja 300 on the middleweight Yamaha racer. Ninja 300 posted 135 units in the sales chart and dominated every possible rival of its segment.

Even the number of units posted by 390cc KTM bikes and TVS Apache RR 310 were not so great in comparison to the green team member. Yamaha was the worst hit product as pricing slightly favoured the other options. Yamaha R3 is available for INR 3.49 lakh while the Ninja 300 is available for INR 2.98 lakh, and the difference of INR 51,000 is still too much for buyers in India.

On the other hand, KTM RC 390 is available for INR 2.41 lakh. The price difference is quite massive at INR 1.08 lakh. The biggest difference among full faired, 300cc+ bikes comes between R3 and RR 310 as buyers can save INR 1.26 lakh from the ex-showroom price in Delhi.

A typical buyer in India may not consider the power difference as the ultimate point of decision as the quality of engines is very high for all these products. Apache RR 310 is the most affordable motorcycle of its kind. In comparison with Yamaha R3, an ideal buyer in Kerala will save INR 1.50 lakh from the ex-showroom price of the R3. At present, the Apache RR 310 is priced at INR 2.23 lakh in Delhi and INR 1.99 lakh in Kerala.

The upcoming 2019 R3 design will help Yamaha boost the sales number. However, if the pricing goes wrong this time, Kawasaki won’t offer them a second chance.

A recent report in the automotive industry claims that Yamaha is planning to launch the new MT-03 street fighter in 2019. When launched in India, the bike would be competing with BMW G310R and Benelli TNT 300 in its price range. However, the segment is dominated by single cylinder lightweight motorcycles in the Indian market.

Meet Yamaha R15 GF Edition by Gears & Fillets: While everyone is talking about the third generation R15, Gears & Fillets brought their impressively wrapped Yamaha R15 V2 in Gloss Red and Black. As stock shades of R15 V2 are filled with stickers all over, those who love watching plain shades would feel at home with this typical motorcycle.

Using Red as major shade, they have offered black inserts at important positions to make things better than ever. Alloy wheels were left black to get the best out of proportionate design language of the R15 V2. Inspired by the R15 V3, they have used Black stripe in the middle of the fuel tank on the bike. This angle also clears that Gears & Fillets have named this one as R15 GF Edition.

Yamaha YZF-R15 GF Edition

Headlights of this R15 are completely smoked and fitted with projectors that have red outer rings. Rear light also gets wrapped in dark shade and flaunts an upside-down Y design area for the headlight. You can find a skull pasted over the fuel tank while all mechanical parts were kept stock for best riding experience.

Yamaha R15 V2 is powered by a 149.8cc, single cylinder engine producing 16.8 BHP and 15 Nm of torque. The engine is liquid cooled, fuel injected and comes with a 6-speed gearbox. Yamaha recently discontinued the YZF-R15 Version 2.0 in India.

Yamaha R15 V3 Monster Energy Edition is a dealer level modification and the motorcycle comes in Black and Gold livery with strategically planted Gold panels over the Crystal Black shade. The dealer level mod commands a price tag of INR 14,500 (converted from IDR 3 million) but gives a clear idea of how excellently the motorcycle handles a design theme on its aerodynamic body. To keep the rhythm alive, they have used Gold painted alloy wheels on the motorcycle. Fans can find Monster Energy and Michelin monikers on body panels.

CarGloss Paint Works from Indonesia has used water brush technique for this excellent job. Apart from painting the motorcycle, everything has been kept according to the stock configuration. Yamaha R15 Version 3 was launched in India for INR 1.25 lakh at Auto Expo in February 2018. The current price after the recent price hike and ABS addition is INR 1.39 lakh.

The price is ex-showroom and does not include any sort of added fee like registration or insurance. The India-spec R15 V3 carries the same design as the Indonesia-spec model but for the Indian market, the expensive tyres and USD forks have been replaced with MRF sourced Zappers and conventional telescopic forks. This was done in order to keep cost under check.

Yamaha MT-15 vs R15 Version 3 (Detailed Comparison): Yamaha has finally launched the MT-15 in India with an ex-showroom price tag of INR 1.36 lakh. MT-15 and R15 V3 are two different products based on the same frame. Still, the number of differences are huge enough for an enthusiast to have a deep comparison before deciding on the body type for the motorcycle.

Before moving forward with the differences, let’s first understand the common points for both the bikes. The chassis stays Deltabox on both the motorcycles, pushing the capability of the naked streetfighter higher by a praiseworthy margin in comparison to their own FZS V3.

Yamaha MT-15
Yamaha MT-15

The alloy wheel design and tyre size on both the bikes are identical. Another big thing that stays common on both bikes is the engine. The 155.1cc, single cylinder engine from Yamaha is good for 19.3 HP @ 10,000 rpm and 14.7 Nm at 8,500 rpm. The output, along with the slipper clutch and 6-speed gearbox stays common on both the bikes. The first difference in Yamaha MT-15 and R15 V3 is the use of aluminium swingarm on the track-spec racer. Both the bikes feature standard telescopic forks and sporty monoshock placement.

Yamaha R15 V3
Yamaha R15 V3

The handlebar on the MT-15 is a bar-type unit with higher placement for a straight riding position. On the other hand, R15 V3 features sporty clip-on handlebar that is directly mounted on the suspension. The effect can be felt immediately and comfort is sacrificed in the process. The power-to-weight ratio favors the MT-15 whereas aerodynamics take the R15’s side due to added panels and inclined front fascia. Yamaha MT-15 features inverted console in place of the standard white back-lit display on the R15 V3.

Yamaha MT-15 Console
Yamaha MT-15 Console

The rear view mirrors are mounted on the handlebar of MT-15 while the placement of the same is on the fairing of the R15 V3. Yamaha brings dual LED headlight on the R15 V3 while MT-15 features a bi-functional projector headlight with two daytime running lights on the top side. The windscreen is small and practical for city conditions on the streetfighter.

Yamaha R15 V3 Console
Yamaha R15 V3 Console

The Yamaha R15 V3 offers split seat while MT-15 is seen with a single seat. The fuel tank design is quite linear on the R15 Version 3 while MT-15 features a chiseled unit with extensions that are similar to the 2019 Yamaha FZS V3. The R15 V3 is available in 2 variants in India:

  • Base (Standard Colors): INR 1.39 lakh
  • Darknight (Matte Black): INR 1.41 lakh

Yamaha MT-15 is available in a single variant for INR 1.36 lakh (ex-showroom). The most disappointing thing is that the MT-15 comes with a single channel ABS unit. Yamaha should have equipped the bike with dual-channel ABS unit as the brand is already offering the same on the R15 V3.

Yamaha MT-15 looks equally stunning in these live photos, clearing the fact that they have no intention of staying down on the sales chart of 2019. The pricing may feel slightly out of place for some buyers, but the design lines have that magnetic effect that can bring buyers into the Yamaha stores.

MT-15 is powered by a 155.1cc, liquid cooled and fuel injected engine, producing 19.3 HP of maximum power and 14.7 Nm of maximum torque. The engine comes mated to a 6-speed gearbox. Yamaha MT-15 ABS arrived in India with style, leaving everyone stunned with not just the exclusive finish, but also with over the edge pricing. The shock was so intense that many dreams will be left hanging in the middle and many will spend a little bit more to reach the full-faired R15 V3 for sure. The engine and styling section still stays in favour of the motorcycle. Here are the pros/cons of buying the new MT-15.

Yamaha MT-15 Pros & Cons

List of MT-15 Pros

1) Unique Styling – The styling part is the biggest USP for MT-15, all thanks to the thin tail section and more than that, the unique facial expressions. The side profile is completely inspired by the large-displacement MT series motorcycles.

2) Bi-Functional LED Headlight – The LED headlight is practical and offers both high as well as the low beam from the single projector. The magic is higher when you see the two LED daytime running lights in action as they save energy by letting the light stay switched off during the day.

3) Powerful Engine – The 155.1cc, single cylinder engine is good for 19.3 HP and 14.7 Nm. The power output is very practical when equated to the 138 kg of wet weight. The motorcycle will add dedicated sprinting in everyday routine for sure.

4) VVA & Slipper Clutch – The use of slipper clutch makes it easy for the rider to use the Yamaha MT-15 in tough situations while VVA helps to keep power delivery steady in low as well as high rpm range.

5) Informative Console – The fully digital instrument console offers an inverted view of the values, adding important features like gear shift indicator, VVA indicator and mileage display for the rider. The USB charging option here is equally beneficial.

List of MT-15 Cons

1) Overpriced  Yamaha has launched the MT-15 in India with an ex-showroom price tag of INR 1.36 lakh. The lack of features from the motorcycle has made it overpriced in comparison to the R15 V3 available for INR 1.39 lakh. It comes without the aluminium swingarm and even uses the same ABS unit as the lower priced Yamaha FZS.

2) Single Channel ABS – The motorcycle is packed with single channel ABS on the front wheel, leaving fans disappointed as they were waiting for the same ABS setup as Yamaha R15 V3.

3) Limited Shades with Plain Black Wheels – The new MT-15 is available in Dark Matt Blue and Metallic Black shade, leaving buyers without any striking colour combinations like the international-spec model. Even the wheels are plain black on both the shades.

4) No USD Forks – The motorcycle comes with standard forks and the pricing mentioned here seems like for the version that will never arrive here. The skipping of USD forks is not that great move when taking the price to such a high point.

5) Different Swingarm – The beautiful swingarm from Yamaha R15 V3 was missed from the spec sheet of MT-15 in India. The use of standard version was also one of the cost-cutting attempts here.
