What is Navratri?

Navratri is a much-awaited festival across the country. It is celebrated in different forms, with varied names, in numerous culture and in a number of different ways. It is one of those festivals that bridges the discrete cultures that reside in the country and coheres them.

In the north-eastern and eastern parts of India, Durga Puja is synonymous with Navratri on the other hand in the northern and western parts of India, the festival is synonymous with Ram Lila and Dussehra. With the introduction of smartphones, WhatsApp, and Facebook, people like to greet each through Navratri wishes, greetings, and images.

Behind the different forms of celebration, there are different tales behind these. Durga Puja signifies the battle of Devi Durga with the buffalo demon Mahishasur in which she emerges victorious. Ram Lila signifies the tale of Lord Ram and his battle with Ravana. In both cases, the festival mainly marks the victory of good over evil.

In the eastern region, the celebration of Durga Puja includes decoration of the stage, placing of the idol of Durga, dressing up performing, reciting the legends and the Hindu script. Similarly, in Ram Lila people perform the legend of Lord Ram and Ravana. Attractive Navratri images and greetings depicting the same are also circulated through social media to wish the distant relatives.

Interesting Facts About Navratri

  • In a year there are five Navratri whereas the Sharad Navratri is the most significant.
  • The Garba and Dandiya performed during Navratri in which the dancers move in a circle. This circle signifies the circle starting from birth to death.

  • Tales also say that Lord Ram worshipped Goddess Durga for nine days, hence he was able to kill Ravana.
  • For nine nights, nine different forms of Durga are worshipped.
  • In West Bengal, to mark the end of Mahishasur, a buffalo is slaughtered as a ritual.
  • In Karnataka, the tenth day after the Navratri is celebrated as Dasara or the Royal Festival.
  • The festival is also a major crop season event.

In order to abide by the purpose of the second phase of the FAME scheme, the government of India has sanctioned a total of 5,595 electric buses that will be running in the 64 cities of the country as public vehicles for carrying out intercity and intracity operations.

For boosting clean mobility the Ministry of Heavy Industry (MoHI) and the Public Enterprise had invited an Expression of Interest (EoI) for the submission of the proposal for distributing electric buses at an operational cost basis. As per EoI, buses which satisfy required localization level and technical eligibility notified under FAME India scheme phase II will be eligible for funding under FAME India scheme phase II.

In this process, the Department of Heavy Industry received around 86 proposals from all the states and UTs of the country for the deployment of 14,988 electric buses. After analysing these proposals and on the advice of Project Implementation and Sanctioning Committee (PISC) the government has assigned about 5,095 electric buses for intracity purpose, 400 buses for intercity operation and also 100 buses for last-mile connectivity to the DMRC (Delhi Metro Rail Corporation). The above details were officially released by the Ministry.

The buses will be manufactured under the joint venture of the Indian automaker JBM and the Polish brand, Solaris Bus and Coach. The companies will be investing a total of INR 300 crore in the coming 2 to 3 years. In the further process, all the selected cities or STUs (State Transport Undertaking) require to participate in the initiation of the procurement process in a time-bound manner for the purpose of the deployment of the electric buses that will be then availed at an operational cost basis.

The buses are expected to run 4 billion kilometres during contracts which will further save 1.2 billion litres of fuel cutting down around 2.6 million tonnes of CO2 emissions.

The stakeholders in the auto industry unanimously have requested the Government to cut down the rates of GST to 18%. The president of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), Rajan Wadhera said in a statement that there is a major requirement to lower the rates of the GST to 18% from 28%.

In an official statement, he said – “Need for an immediate reduction in the GST rates has been agreed unanimously by all automobile manufacturers, including the two-wheeler OEMs. This was also reiterated at a recent meeting with the finance minister where all OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) participated”. Two-wheeler brands like the Hero MotorCorp have also nodded upon the idea.

There have been a number of reasons for this slowdown. First of all, the slump in our income growth and Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFC) crisis is the reason. It is unlike the other cycles that happened due to the global crisis. Secondly, cost pressure has been witnessed as over the FY19-21, there will be a hike in prices from 13-30 per cent which will be due to safety, insurance and emission-related costs. From April 2020, India will upgrade to BS-VI from BS-IV which will also constitute in a price increase.

There has been an expansion in the size of the pre-owned market which as a result impacts the demand for new vehicles especially when there is a hike in prices going on. Also, the drop in the current cycle in gross and earnings before interest depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) margins is huge. It’s the first time that the decline in EBITDA is higher than gross margin.

The auto industry is going through an unparalleled crisis which has caused a steep drop in sales over months now. Dealerships across the country have been closed, huge manpower has already been slashed, also the production of vehicles has also been decreased as there is a huge drop in the demand. On the contrary, the Finance Ministry said officially that the GST rate is already below expectations and a further reduction can complicate the situation.

Online Vehicle Registration System in the Works: The Indian government is planning to cut down the hassle of registration of a new vehicle by the buyer at the dealership. Buyers have to pay a considerably higher amount to the dealerships in order to get their vehicle registered from the local Regional Transport Office (RTO). The dealer tends to charge higher than the authorised amount in a number of different ways for the services they provide you.

The traditional method of registering a vehicle is about to change as the Indian government is reportedly working on an online vehicle registration system, cutting down the dealer’s interference in the process.

About the details of this new trend, the Minister of Road Transport and Highway, Nitin Gadkari opened up and told that customers will have to access an online portal and after login, providing the necessary details, they will be able to register their new vehicle.

He emphasised that this new method will help customers escape those extra charges that they have to pay for the dealer’s services. Although a bugging fact exists in this that an amount will be charged from the dealer that will be payable to the RTO.

Online Vehicle Registration System

Mr Nitin Gadkari in a statement told – “The law states that when you have purchased a new vehicle you have to take that vehicle to the RTO Office for the registration. We have made a change in that. Registration authority will be the state government which is the RTO but the consumers can register the vehicle online, you don’t have to take the vehicle to the RTO. The consumer can save the fee charged by the dealer who used to register the vehicle on your behalf. The dealer will deposit the money with the state government.”

Government is making various efforts to ensure the welfare of people by making a number of amendments in the existing laws. One of the recent amendments was witnessed in the Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Act 2019 where fines have been revised to increase the strictness regarding traffic rules.

FASTag is a government-issued smart card which is used for automatic deduction of a toll tax on the highways. According to a recent report, the FASTags can soon be used to automatically pay for fuel on the highways. The new version of FASTag, the FASTag 2.0 has been specifically designed for this. IDFC Bank is the first bank to get approval from the RBI for payment of fuel refilling using FASTags. No other Indian bank has been approved the new measures as of yet.

Government of India has been rooting for the new FASTag capabilities to promote cashless transactions across every toll plaza. Since fuel and toll are the top two items that require cash on the road, the use of FASTags for both will make the drivers go cashless which is ultimately the new motto for the govt of India.

In addition to this, the FASTags will be made compulsory for all the vehicles and lanes at the toll plazas expect for one single lane that will accept cash payments. This initiative is expected to start from December 1, 2019. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and the Indian Highways Management Company Ltd are working on several measures to make the FASTags acceptable across major toll plazas in the country.

Some reports also suggest that the government of India is also planning to integrate the FASTags with the GST Network. They are planning to make FASTags acceptable locally even for the parking payments. At present, only 22 banks including ICICI, PayTM and SBI bank are able to issue FASTags.

The total number of toll plazas on the highways is around 450. NHAI has promised to share half of the capital cost required to set up a toll booth if the local agencies agree for a FASTag system for toll payment and fuel refilling.

The Indian government is taking multiple steps towards the adoption of electric vehicles. Recently, the government has invited proposals from business entities for the deployment of 1,000 EV charging stations in big and smart cities.

The Ministry of Heavy Industries said that proposals have been invited from entities that intend to develop EV charging infrastructure in cities with a million-plus population figure as per the 2011 census. The Indian government has invited proposals for the satellite towns that are connected to seven metro cities namely Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, and Chennai. Also, the major cities of special category State/UTs are included in this along with the capital cities of all States/UTs that are not covered in the above-mentioned categories.

The Heavy Industries Ministry said – “Initially, 1,000 EV charging stations are earmarked for deployment through this EOI. These charging stations will be sanctioned to different states/cities/entities after evaluation of the proposals received under this EOI.”

It is also possible that as per MNRE guidelines the charging stations should be connected with ‘grid-connected solar power plant’ of required capacity so as to ensure grid stability and green energy for electric vehicles. The last date for the submission of the proposal is August 20, 2019.

The Fame-II scheme was recently approved by the government for three years commencing from April 1, 2019, with total budgetary support of INR 10,000 crore. Under Phase-II of the scheme, the government plans to support the development of electric vehicle charging infrastructure by extending the capital grant to different organisations that are working with city government for the promotion of the use of electric vehicles. Also, a few days back the NITI Aayog asked OEMs to come with an EV roadmap as soon as possible.
