The dream of owning a foldable smartphone has turned into reality. Royole FlexPai is the first smartphone to have a foldable display, with more than 2,00,000 times of fold and unfold certification from an unknown source. The smartphone acts as a tablet with 7.8-inch AMOLED display in the natural form while folding the same brings a 4-inch display to the user for more practicality. Not just that, it is the first smartphone to feature a 7nm Snapdragon 8150 processor. Memory options include 6GB/128GB, 8GB/256GB and 8GB/512GB versions, starting from a price tag of CNY 8999 (INR 95,400 approx).
The top spec model is priced much higher at CNY 12,999 (INR 1,37,700 approx). The flex technology is quite expensive in comparison to other options like dual screen and full view displays. Royole is offering a fast charging option with 80% of power in just one hour of charge. The battery used here is 3800 mAh, resulting in an overall weight of 320 grams. The thickness is 7.6mm when seen in the form of a tablet while folding the same brings 15.2mm of overall thickness. That number is comparable to old generation Nokia phones from the N-series.
The phone comes with the 16MP+20MP primary camera for crisp shots. As the buyer’s edition is still away from delivery, Royole has launched a developer version of the FlexPai from November 1. As even LG, Samsung and others are working on bendable smartphones, it is yet to be seen how well those mass market brands price such a unique product. It was nowhere mentioned that the glass is shatterproof as the bending the display from a hinge does not mean that it can take the same amount of force on the outer edges. The phone runs on Water OS, based on none other than the Android platform.
