Rs 1500 Penalty on Returning JioPhone in the 1st year

Penalty on Returning JioPhone in the 1st year: Till this report came up, JioPhone was a dream come true for many telecom users of India. Those who could not afford high end smartphones but still wish to connect to the world could use its affordable service charge to fulfill their dream.

But now, it seems that all was in vain as JioPhone is not something that would act on your actions. In fact, it’s you who need to go through the rules in order to get back you INR 1500 worth of so called security deposit. We are always said to read the terms and conditions carefully and most of us miss that with a smile.

Here’s one more example where not reading the terms and conditions backfired for the buyers. Paying INR 1500 as security deposit is mandatory and that will stay with JioPhone brand for 3 years, without any interest. After that, you will get the same back by returning JioPhone. You can recharge the phone with INR 153 to get unlimited calls and internet.

These two points were publicized as a major reform to our economy and millions of people booked the phone on its first day. Did anyone go through the terms? Here are some important points to figure out:

  • INR 1500 + GST or other taxes (Before 12 months from the date of first issue of the JioPhone)
  • INR 1000 + GST or other taxes (After 12 months and before 24 months from the date of first issue of the JioPhone)
  • INR 500 + GST or other taxes (After 24 months and before 36 months from the date of first issue of the JioPhone)
  • You need to recharge the phone for a minimum of INR 1500 every year (equal to 10 recharges of INR 153) or else you need to bring the phone back with the above given fee.
  • If you keep the phone with yourself for more than 39 months, you are not going to get back the money in any case.
  • If somehow the phone breaks during this period, they won’t take it back after 36 months.

In total, you need to bring them a minimum business of INR 4500 in 3 years and after that, ensure that their device is healthy enough to get a good recycle value. During that period, you are not allowed to earn any interest on your deposit while they have every possible way of keeping that money intact with their sources.

Buying JioPhone means you are ready to pay them INR 6900 in 3 years and then apply for a refund of INR 1500, that too if you are lucky enough to save that little device.
