2022 Onam Significance and Celebrations

The festival is celebrated to honour King Mahabali, a kind-hearted and benign demon who is said to return to his throne at Onam. King Mahabali, according to Vaishnava mythology, conquered all the Gods and ruled over all three planets. Mahabali, in contrast to other demons, was lovely and less cruel. Malayalis all around the world celebrate this feast in the month of Chingam, which is the first month of the regional calendar.

People buy new clothing, exchange presents, and visit temples during the Onam celebration. Cultural events such as Kummati kali, Pulikali, Atthachamayam, tug of war, and, most notably, the boat race are part of the 10-day Onam festival celebration. Traditional dances like Kathakali and Kumatti kali are performed during the Onam celebration.

The Sadya, or Thiru Onam supper, is the most exciting element of the Onam celebration. Around 26 items are made and served on a plantain leaf. Onam feasts are held at various hotels around Kerala and beyond. Onam occurs just once a year, yet the excitement it inspires in Malayalees lasts till the next festival.
