Sales of compact SUVs have increased significantly as a result of the strong performance of several well-liked models. In total, the segment achieved 41,641 units in sales marking an impressive 25.67% growth compared to the same period last year.
Compact SUV Sales in December 2023
The Kia Seltos emerged as the top-performing compact SUV, experiencing an outstanding 66.09% year-on-year growth. In December 2023, it sold 9,957 units, maintaining its dominance and expanding its market share to 23.91%.
On the flip side, Hyundai Creta faced a decline in sales, with 9,243 units sold, reflecting a -9.43% change compared to December 2022. Despite this dip, the Creta retained a substantial market share of 22.20%. This decline is expected to be temporary as Hyundai prepares to launch the new Creta aiming to boost sales and reclaim its No 1 position in the compact SUV segment.
Maruti Grand Vitara showcased a positive trend, achieving a growth of 13.24% with 6,988 units sold, securing a commendable market share of 16.78%. Toyota HyRyder continued its upward trajectory, recording an 18.45% growth with 4,976 units sold, contributing to a market share of 11.95%.
A notable newcomer to the market was the Honda Elevate selling 4,376 units in its debut month. The model captured a 10.51% market share, indicating strong demand. Volkswagen Taigun and Skoda Kushaq both continued to sell steadily, with 2,456 and 2,485 units sold, respectively. While the Kushaq witnessed a growth of 13.68%, the Taigun faced a slight decline of -8.73%.
MG Astor encountered a significant challenge, recording a -51.33% decline in sales with 821 units sold. With MG recently launching the updated 2024 Astor, we anticipate sales picking up in the coming months. The Citroen C3 Aircross, although a newcomer compared to others, registered sales of 339 units.
Month-on-Month Comparison
In a month-on-month comparison, Kia Seltos experienced a 14.78% decline in sales, with 9,957 units sold in December 2023 compared to 11,684 the previous month. The Hyundai Creta saw a sharp drop in sales, falling to 9,243 in December from 11,814 in November. This represents a -21.76% decrease. The Maruti Grand Vitara saw a little decline in sales, with 6,988 units sold, or a -11.96% decrease from November.
Toyota HyRyder emerged as a standout performer, recording a notable 65.59% increase in sales, selling 4,976 units in December compared to 3,005 the month before. Honda Elevate saw a small dip of -7.97%, selling 4,376 units in December compared to 4,755 in November.
In December, sales of the Volkswagen Taigun and Skoda Kushaq both saw growth. Skoda Kushaq recorded a 30.24% growth, while Volkswagen Taigun witnessed a substantial 38.68% increase in sales. MG Astor recorded a moderate growth of 13.09%, with 821 units sold in December compared to 726 in November. Despite being in its early stages, the Citroen C3 Aircross has improved sales steadily, going from selling 249 units in November to 339 units in December—a 36.14% rise.
