Formula 1 Racing Returns to India

Exciting news for motorsports enthusiasts in India! Plans are in motion to bring back Formula 1 racing with the Sports Authority of Gujarat leading the charge. The aim is to construct a new Formula 1 circuit in Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City) in Gandhinagar. If successful this would be India’s second Formula 1 track following the Buddh International Circuit in Noida, Uttar Pradesh.

Ambitious Plans for Gujarat

The initiative is not just about the thrill of racing it’s a strategic move by Gujarat to enhance the state’s economy and tourism. The Gujarat Sports Authority has made a big move by requesting ideas for a thorough feasibility assessment and master plan for the proposed Formula One circuit. The project is expected to cost between Rs 5,000 crore and Rs 10,000 crore, with 2028 being the optimistic completion deadline.

Addressing Past Challenges

The decision to build a new circuit stems from past challenges faced by the Buddh International Circuit including logistical issues administrative constraints, and high costs. The discontinuation of the Indian Grand Prix from the FIA tour prompted Gujarat to strategize and overcome these hurdles for a successful return of Formula 1 to India.

Gujarat’s Vision for Motorsports

The government of India’s overarching goal of fostering motorsports in the nation is in line with the proposed Formula One circuit. Presently in its infancy, the project seeks to establish Gujarat as a major participant in the international racing circuit in addition to adding international motorsports to India’s schedule. The government plans to finish building the F1 racetrack by 2028, and the feasibility study is now in progress.

Tax Benefits and Strategic Location

A distinctive advantage of the proposed F1 circuit is its location within the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City, offering Special Economic Zone (SEZ) status. This designation provides essential tax benefits making it attractive for hosting high-profile events like Formula 1. Exemptions from taxes for imported cars and equipment brought in by sponsors enhance the appeal of the endeavor for both organizers and participants.

Progress and International Expertise

In August 2023, a team of racing experts from the UK visited GIFT City to explore the feasibility of constructing the circuit. Currently, a comprehensive survey and feasibility study are in progress. The government is determined to advance the project and sees the completion of the F1 circuit as a crucial milestone for Gujarat’s sports infrastructure.

Gujarat’s Strides in Sports Infrastructure

Gujarat has been making significant strides in sports infrastructure with the inauguration of the Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera in February 2020. This stadium, the largest globally with a capacity of 1,32,000 spectators is a testament to the state’s commitment to hosting national and international events. Plans for five new international-level stadiums, including a proposal for an international standard football stadium for the potential 2036 Olympics underscore Gujarat’s dedication to becoming a frontrunner in the global sports arena.

Anticipation for a Second F1 Circuit

As the proposed F1 circuit in Gujarat progresses through the feasibility stage, the motorsports community eagerly anticipates the realization of a second Formula 1 circuit in India. Beyond the thrill of racing, the project signifies Gujarat’s determination to leave a mark in the global sports landscape. Exciting times lie ahead for both motorsports enthusiasts and the state of Gujarat!
