Made-in-India Jimny 5-door Hits the Streets of South Africa

The South African version of the 5-door Suzuki Jimny has been recently launched, priced between Rs 19.65 lakh to Rs 21.93 lakh (converted from South African Rand) for the ex-showroom prices. Despite sharing the same 1.5-litre petrol engine with the India-spec model, the South African variant has a slightly lower power output.

This 5-door Maruti Jimny made its global debut earlier this year at the 2023 Auto Expo and was subsequently introduced in India. Maruti not only produces the India-spec 5-door Jimny but also manufactures export units destined for various countries, including those that have already received the regular 3-door Jimny. South Africa is one such country, and Suzuki has now officially launched the Jimny 5-door there.

Price Details

In terms of pricing, the base-spec 5-door Jimny in South Africa is approximately Rs 7 lakh more expensive than its India-spec counterpart. Both models are available in two broad variants named GL and GLX. The entry-level Jimny 5-door in South Africa comes at a premium of Rs 1.78 lakh over the base-spec Jimny 3-door priced at Rs 17.87 lakh (converted from R3,90,900).

Powertrain details

Under the hood, the South Africa-spec Jimny features the same 1.5-litre petrol engine as the India-spec model, albeit with slightly different power figures. It produces 102 PS and 130 Nm, which is 3 PS and 4 Nm less than the India-spec variant. Transmission options remain consistent with a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic. The 5-door Jimny also comes with four-wheel-drive as standard, boasting a low-range transfer case and a ground clearance of 210 mm.

Features and Safety

When it comes to features and safety, the South African model mirrors the India-spec Jimny. It includes a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, cruise control, automatic climate control, up to 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, traction control, electronic stability program (ESP), hill hold and descent control, and a rearview camera.

Rivals

In the Indian market, the 5-door Maruti Jimny faces competition from the Mahindra Thar and the Force Gurkha, as there are currently no other 5-door off-roaders in its price range. However, the 5-door versions of the Mahindra Thar and the Force Gurkha are under development and are expected to be launched soon, although they are anticipated to be larger and more expensive than the Jimny.
