Mahindra Thar 5-Door Set for Indian Debut on August 15

The Mahindra Thar, a beloved off-roader, is set to welcome a new addition to its lineup with the much-anticipated 5-door variant. After two years of development, this family-friendly version is on the brink of its launch expected to bring a blend of practicality and adventure.

Design and Dimensional Changes

The 5-door Thar is built on the same platform as the 3-door model but features a longer wheelbase and two additional doors, enhancing its suitability as a family SUV without compromising its rugged appeal. Although it retains the iconic Thar design, spy shots have revealed some updates including new circular LED headlights and a redesigned grille. Unlike the 3-door variant, the 5-door Thar is expected to offer a fixed metal top option.

Enhanced Comfort and Features

In line with its family-oriented design, the Thar 5-door will boast more comfort features than its 3-door counterpart. Spy shots suggest the inclusion of a larger touchscreen infotainment system, automatic climate control, and a sunroof. Safety is also a priority, with expectations of six airbags and a 360-degree camera system.

Powertrain Options

Under the hood, the Thar 5-door is likely to share its engines with the 3-door model: a 2-litre turbo-petrol and a 2.2-litre diesel, possibly with increased outputs akin to those found in the Mahindra Scorpio range. Both engines are expected to be paired with manual and automatic transmission choices, and buyers will have the option to choose between rear-wheel-drive (RWD) and 4-wheel-drive (4WD) configurations.

Launch Date and Pricing

While the exact launch date is yet to be confirmed, Mahindra has sent out invites for an event on August 15, 2024, hinting at the possible unveiling of the Thar 5-door on India’s Independence Day. This follows Mahindra’s tradition of significant reveals on this date, including the second-gen Thar in 2020. The Thar 5-door’s pricing is anticipated to start from Rs 15 lakh (ex-showroom), positioning it as a larger alternative to the Maruti Suzuki Jimny and a rival to the 5-door Force Gurkha.
