Mahindra offers the Thar in two distinct trim levels right now. The AX(O) and LX have two petrol and one diesel engine options. As per one of the recent updates, Mahindra is planning to release a new entry-level 4×4 model soon. This new entrant could be positioned below the AX(O) trim with the 2.2-litre diesel and 2.0-litre petrol engines.
This upcoming entry-level 4WD model could be called AX AC. Some features that are currently available on the AX(O) trim may be removed. Mahindra used to sell a stripped-down AX trim, but it was discontinued. The upcoming AX AC trim could be a four-seater with seats facing forward.
This could also be in response to the upcoming Jimny SUV from Maruti Suzuki. Maruti is planning for the Jimny to go on sale in May 2023. We expect the Maruti Jimny to undercut the current prices of the Thar. This new Thar trim could also be marketed to off-road enthusiasts.
Mahindra currently offers the Thar with three engine options. There’s a base-spec 118hp, 300Nm, 1.5-litre diesel engine with a 6-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive. Then there’s the 2.0-litre petrol engine with 152hp and 300Nm of torque, and the 2.2-litre diesel engine with 130hp and 300Nm of torque. Both engines are available with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission, and the diesel engine is only available in 4WD. The petrol is available in both 4WD and RWD configurations. The upcoming AX AC trim could be equipped with the latter two engines and MT 4×4.
Thar’s only direct competitor in the market is the Force Gurkha at the moment. But it will soon face competition from the upcoming Maruti Jimny. Diesel Thar variants are currently priced between Rs 9.99 lakh and Rs 16.49 lakh. The petrol versions range in price from Rs 13.49 lakh to Rs 15.82 lakh.
