Toyota has updated the 2024 GR Yaris with an optional eight-speed automatic transmission, known as Direct Automatic Transmission. Unveiled at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show, this torque-converter automatic gearbox is designed for quicker shifts and track-specific shift logic. Tested in the Super Taikyu endurance series and the Japan Rally Championship, the GR Yaris now competes with other automatic transmission performance cars on the market. The Toyota GR Yaris has finally gained the option of an automatic transmission, as part of a facelift that includes more power, new styling and updated technology. The eight-speed automatic gearbox is a torque-converter design – not a dual-clutch unit, as favoured by Volkswagen – but Toyota has made bold claims about its shift speed and focus on performance. Production of the 2024 GR Yaris range for Australia is due to commence in late 2024, suggesting first showroom arrivals in early 2025.
1. Unveiling the New Automatic Option: Redefining Convenience
In addition to the new automatic transmission, the 2024 GR Yaris boasts several upgrades. A “Circuit” specification offers enhanced cooling, including an extra radiator, intercooler spray, and a revamped intake system. Automatic gearbox-equipped models also feature a dedicated gearbox cooler, visible in the side intakes. The turbocharged three-cylinder engine receives a power boost from a fortified valvetrain, new exhaust valve material, increased direct injection pressure, a fresh intake air pressure sensor, and redesigned lightweight pistons.
2. Increased Torque: Elevating Performance Dynamics
Torque, the force that propels a vehicle forward, takes center stage with a significant increase in power. We analyze the revised torque specs, and looking at how more power results in better acceleration, and more responsiveness, and a more engaging the driving experience overall.
3. Performance Metrics
From horsepower to torque curves, we analyze how the new automatic option and increased torque work in tandem to elevate the driving dynamics. How do these upgrades compare to the previous model, and what benchmarks do they set in the competitive automotive landscape?
4. Driving Modes and Customization: Tailoring the Experience
The introduction of a new automatic option often comes with enhanced driving modes and customization features. The 1.6-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine has received a power boost to 224kW and 400Nm – up from the previous model’s 200kW/370Nm, the GRMN Yaris edition’s 200kW/390Nm, and the Japanese-market GR Corolla’s 224kW/370Nm. Toyota says the performance boost is designed to “improve competitiveness in motorsports”, and comes from upgraded engine internals, revised exhaust, increased direct injection pressure, a new intake air-pressure sensor, and lightweight pistons. The six-speed manual transmission remains available, but the eight-speed auto is offered as an option, with the same GR-Four selectable all-wheel-drive system.
6. Technological Integration: Innovations for a Connected Drive
Powerful upgrades often go hand in hand with technological advancements. Our analysis covers the seamless integration of power and technology for a modern and sophisticated driving environment. Toyota says the eight-speed auto was developed and durability-tested in circuit and rally racing in Japan, and had input from the company’s Toyota Gazoo Racing rally drivers.
The company claims the gearbox has been calibrated to function “similar[ly] to how professional drivers shift gears,” and uses “highly heat-resistant friction material in the automatic transmission’s gear-shift clutch and enhancements to the transmission’s control software world-class gear-shifting speeds.”
7. Manufacturer’s Vision: Aligning with Future Trends
Manufacturers often introduce powerful upgrades not just to meet current demands but to align with future trends in the automotive industry.
A New Era of Driving Excellence
The 2024 GR Yaris features several updates both inside and out. A bolder front bumper houses the additional coolers, while the interior has been entirely reimagined to focus on the driver. The dashboard may seem a bit peculiar and outdated compared to its predecessor but now includes a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display from the GR Corolla. Although this updated Toyota Yaris G CVT won’t be sold in several global markets, its components could potentially be integrated into future GR Corolla models.
