By Suzuki Motor Gujarat Private Limited (SMG), a wholly owned subsidiary of Maruti Suzuki, has achieved a significant milestone by surpassing the 3 million units production mark, making it the fastest among all Suzuki facilities worldwide to reach this feat. The celebratory unit to roll out of the plant was the Maruti Fronx.
Commencing operations in February 2017, SMG accomplished this remarkable milestone in just six years and 11 months. Notably, the last one million units were manufactured in a mere 17 months, showcasing the plant’s efficiency. With an annual production capacity of 7.50 lakh units the facility has been crucial in manufacturing popular models like Baleno, Swift, Dzire, Fronx, and the Tour S and these vehicles cater to both domestic and export markets.
In recent developments, Maruti Suzuki’s board of directors has approved the acquisition of SMG from Suzuki Motor Corporation, Japan. Formerly a wholly owned subsidiary of SMC, Suzuki Motor Gujarat is now under the direct ownership of Maruti Suzuki.
Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and CEO of Maruti Suzuki India expressed delight in achieving the 3 million cumulative production milestone in Gujarat. He attributed this success to the supportive manufacturing ecosystem in the state acknowledging the contributions of supplier partners and employees of Suzuki Motor Gujarat and Takeuchi extended gratitude for their collaborative efforts that played a pivotal role in achieving this landmark.
With the acquisition of Suzuki Motor Gujarat, Maruti Suzuki aims to enhance its production flexibility. The Gujarat plant is slated to play a crucial role in the production of battery electric vehicles, expected to commence in FY24-25. Presently, the facility manufactures popular models like Swift, Baleno, Dzire, and Fronx. Notably, in line with the ‘Make-in-India’ vision, 50% of Maruti Suzuki’s total vehicle exports in FY22-23 were manufactured at SMG, underscoring its significance in the company’s global operations and this milestone reaffirms Maruti Suzuki’s commitment to manufacturing excellence and its prominent position in the global automotive industry.
