Tesla Driver Escapes Mob Attack in Chicago Sideshow Takeover

A shocking video from the weekend captures a violent sideshow takeover in Chicago. Spectators on a roadway were sitting on and taking photos with a stationary Tesla Model X. When the Tesla driver attempted to leave, chaos erupted as the mob attacked. The driver, in a state of panic, collided with several cars while trying to escape.

The Danger of Sideshows

Sideshows and street takeovers are not new in the United States. Often, they are a severe annoyance, causing delays for law-abiding drivers. However, this incident highlights the dangerous potential of such events.

Video Evidence

Two different videos document the entire incident. Initially, spectators casually posed for photos with the Tesla, which was parked near the participating sideshow drivers. When the Tesla driver tried to move forward to leave, the crowd turned aggressive and began assaulting the SUV.

Violence Unfolds

The situation seemed to calm briefly while the camera focused on two Dodge cars engaged in drifting. However, as the camera returned to the Tesla, chaos resumed. The Tesla attempted to navigate through the crowd, and the crowd retaliated. The Tesla driver drove through the crowd, hitting several people. The driver then tried to maneuver through oncoming traffic and made contact with more cars.

The Tesla eventually became stuck, and the crowd intensified their assault on the vehicle. The rear glass of the Tesla was shattered, prompting the driver to reverse and then move forward again, making contact with additional cars. Shortly after, the driver reached a point on the street where the police were present. As the police arrived, the crowd dispersed, and the Tesla drove to safety.

Community Concerns

Tom Weitzel, a retired police chief from Riverside, Illinois, commented on the incident, stating that these street takeovers are occurring almost every weekend and represent a sense of lawlessness. He suggested that the driver may have feared being injured or carjacked.

The video raised questions about why the police didn’t intervene earlier. Weitzel pointed out that Chicago is severely understaffed, and with just 10 to 12 visible officers in the video, they couldn’t effectively manage over 100 participants.

Investigation Ongoing

Teslas are equipped with multiple cameras, which could aid in identifying and charging the assailants. The incident undoubtedly leaves the Tesla driver with significant damage to their car and a series of explanations to provide to their insurance company. Fortunately, they escaped with their life.
