Toyota is preparing to launch a high-performance variant of the GR Supra, possibly named the Supra GRMN. This upgraded Supra is expected to feature increased power and a more refined chassis, catering to a track-focused driving experience. Sources have revealed that Toyota is currently testing the GR Supra variant, showcasing notable changes such as a fixed rear wing, modified front and rear bumpers, and a lowered ride height.
Under the hood, the high-performance Supra could potentially adopt the BMW Z4’s ‘B58’ straight-six engine, which delivers 340 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque. Alternatively, it might use the ‘S58’ engine from BMW’s M division, featured in the M3 and M4 models. The ‘S58’ engine incorporates various enhancements, including a shift from twin-scroll to single-scroll turbochargers, a modified piston design with a larger bore and shorter stroke, and stronger internal components to support increased power. This results in a highly versatile engine with various power output options, ranging from 460 horsepower and 550 Nm of torque in the BMW M2 to 560 horsepower and 550 Nm in the limited-production BMW 3.0 CSL.
While specific details about this new Supra variant remain undisclosed at this stage, it is anticipated that adopting the ‘S58’ engine could significantly reduce its 0-100 kph (0-62 mph) time compared to the current model’s 4.3 seconds. Additionally, there are speculations about the possibility of this high-performance Supra reviving Toyota’s GRMN (Gazoo Racing, tuned by the Meister of the Nürburgring) badge, previously used for a supercharged version of the Yaris in Europe. The Z4, which shares its underpinnings with the Supra, received subtle styling updates earlier this year, with minimal changes to its mechanical components.
