The 2020 TVS Apache RTR 160 4V has been recently spotted testing on the Indian roads. The motorcycle has been subjected to a few cosmetic changes while the brand will be introducing the production variant of the motorcycle with a BS6-compliant engine since the new emission norms will be effective in India from April 1, 2020. The images surfaced online indicates that the brand has kept the initial body design of the motorcycle intact for the upcoming model.

The motorcycle spotted testing is seen with a halogen headlight while the upcoming BS6 model of the Apache RTR 200 was recently spotted with an LED headlight. Since the motorcycle is not yet in its production state, one can expect the brand to roll out the production model of the 2020 RTR 160 4V with an LED headlight. There aren’t many changes made to the motorcycle except making it compliant with the BS6 norms. One can expect some minor tweaks in the production variant itself though, the chassis and suspension are likely to remain the same.

Powering the current-gen TVS Apache RTR 160 4V is a single-cylinder, oil-cooled engine that is capable of churning out a maximum power of 16.5 HP and an utmost torque of 14.8 Nm. The engine is mated to a 5-speed transmission. The BS6-compliant 2020 TVS Apache RTR 160 4V is likely to get the same power and torque figures though the brand might discontinue the carburetted version of the motorcycle for its 2020 update.

To give a fresh look to the motorcycle, TVS is likely to launch it with new body graphics and colour schemes. The bike is expected to hit the Indian market in early 2020. Once launched in India, the 2020 TVS Apache RTR 160 4V will compete in the market with the likes of Bajaj Pulsar NS160, Yamaha FZS V3, Honda CB Hornet 160R, and the Suzuki Gixxer 155.

The motorcycle gets the same design language as that of its standard variant while the only visual differentiation has been offered by the striking “160” decal on the fuel tank. The neon green highlights start from the headlights, covering the fuel tank, tank shrouds, and goes all the way up to rear and side panels. The under-seat panel at the rear of the motorcycle features a “Pulsarmania” sticker.

The changes made to the motorcycle are limited to the addition of accessories and new body graphics, as the bike remains unaltered in terms of the technical specifications.

Honda’s CB Unicorn 160 failed to mark its presence in the Indian market. Now, because of the poor sales figures in recent times, the company has decided to discontinue the CB Unicorn 160 in India. Few dealers in Mumbai have confirmed the unavailability of the sports commuter and they have no information regarding the restocking of the bike.

After the CBR150R, CB Trigger, CB Dazzler, CB Twister, Eterno scooter, the CB Unicorn 160 is the next addition to the Honda’s discontinued vehicles. The CB Unicorn 160 was introduced as a successor to the CB Unicorn 150 but the customers still preferred buying the Unicorn 150. With an ex-showroom price of INR 76,000, the CB Unicorn 160 was one of the most affordable bikes as compared to its rivals, the TVS Apache RTR 160 4V, Suzuki Gixxer 155  and the Bajaj Pulsar NS160.

Despite attractive pricing, the company was only able to sell an approximate 13,200 units last fiscal whereas the X-Blade sold close to 4,000 bikes in just May 2019. By introducing the Unicorn 160, the company stopped manufacturing the 150 but after some time they relaunched the Unicorn 150.

Honda Unicorn 160 was powered by a 162.71cc single-cylinder engine that was first shared by the Hornet in a different state of tune. Unicorn 160 was good for 13.82 BHP of maximum power at 8000 rpm and 13.92 Nm of maximum torque at 6000 rpm. The engine comes mated to a 5-speed gearbox.

The refined motor claims around 45-50 kmpl of mileage on the Unicorn 160. The top speed is limited to 106 kmph due to more emphasis on mileage. The commuter-spec motorcycle was available with 80/100 front and 110/80 rear tyres. The motorcycle is still listed on the official website of Honda, though it is expected that the brand will remove it in the coming days.

KTM 125 Duke Beats Honda xBlade 160 (Sales Report): KTM 125 Duke registered 2,199 units in the month of April 2019, beating the Honda xBlade 160, which was good for just 1,912 units during the same period. The price difference between both the bikes is huge enough to help xBlade get a much bigger sale number but, it seems like buyers are preferring other options like Hornet and Unicorn. The power output is very impressive at 14.5HP on the 125 Duke while xBlade benefits from decent weight and ample amount of torque.

KTM 125 Duke

The 125cc engine on the Duke is liquid cooled and fuel injected while xBlade uses carburettor and air cooling. Even the displacement difference between both the bikes could not save the xBlade as KTM 125 Duke is known to deliver a top speed of around 110-120 kph, depending on the rider’s weight.

The sales report for April 2019 brought many shocks into the industry as Honda is reducing the production in order to match the ongoing demand. On the other hand, Bajaj and KTM are posting positive sales for the majority of their products. KTM 125 Duke is available for INR 1.25 lakh and can be bought in three exciting shades, while the Honda xBlade 160 comes with an ex-showroom price tag of INR 88,200.

Bajaj has finally launched the Avenger Street 160 at INR 82,253 (ex-showroom Delhi). The bike features single-channel ABS and has replaced the Avenger 180 which was approximately INR 6000 costly than the newly launched Street 160. The cruiser motorcycle is available in two colours: Spicy Red and Ebony Black.

Bajaj Avenger Street 160 is powered by a 160.4cc single cylinder, air-cooled motor and it is able to produce an output which is comparable to the power and torque figures of Avenger 180. It is because it uses the same engine that is available on the Pulsar NS160. The engine produces 15 HP of power at 8500 rpm and a peak torque of 13.5 Nm at 7000 rpm.

Apart from the new engine, everything on the bike remains the same as the 180cc Avenger. It uses the same chassis setup with the same dimensions. Even the ground clearance of the Avenger Street 160 remains the same at 177mm. The kerb weight of the bike stands at 150kg, which is also exactly the same as the now-discontinued 180cc Avenger model. The bike also misses the all-digital instrumentation as we have seen on the Avenger 220. The Avenger Street 160 uses an analogue-digital instrument console to keep the costs in check.

One of the main reasons that the company has chosen to replace Street 180 with Street 160 is because the 180cc and 220cc motorcycles were too close to each other in terms of price. So, with the launch of the new 160cc Avenger, the brand would be able to target the customers in a better way. This will also help Bajaj Auto to differentiate the two models significantly. Around this price tag, the new Avenger Street 160 has only one direct rival that is the Suzuki Intruder which starts at INR 1.01 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

Narayan Sundararaman, Vice President (Marketing) – Motorcycles, Bajaj Auto Ltd said: “As the segment leader, Bajaj Auto believes in the strategy of differentiation and category expansion. Avenger Street 160 with ABS provides contemporary styling whilst retaining its classical roadster design. The discerning customer gets a definite step-up into the world of classic biking. This will open up choices to the entry-level sport’s customers.”
