According to a recent report by The Economic Times, one of the most desired motorcycles running through the streets for a decade, the Hero Karizma ZMR is on the verge of the dead-end considering that the brand has not manufactured a single unit of the 223cc sportbike in the past six months.

Earlier, disregarding the rumours of discontinuing the Hero Karizma ZMR, the brand commented – “Karizma is not discontinued and continues to be a part of our portfolio. At present, we are focusing on the model in our overseas markets.”

As no units of the motorcycle have been manufactured from the past six months, one can expect the brand to officially discontinue the Hero Karizma before the implementation of the new BS6 emission norms in the country from April 1, 2020.

Featuring the Bollywood prodigy, Hrithik Roshan as its brand ambassador, the Hero Karizma was launched in the Indian market in 2003 and the sportbike instantly gained popularity among the young riders.

The Hero Karizma witnessed a good run till 2009 though, the introduction of the mighty Yamaha R15 did sweep away most of its enthusiasts and forced Hero MotoCorp to launch the more powerful Karizma ZMR, which also bit the dust with the introduction of the Yamaha R15 V2 in addition to the other powerful competitors like KTM Duke 200, Bajaj Pulsar NS200 and more.

The motorcycle was able to register a total of 314 units in the FY2018 while the sales number fell down to almost 50% in FY2019 by witnessing only 138 units in total sales. In addition to this, the brand has been able to export only 80 units of the motorcycle in the last fiscal year.

The Hero Karizma used to be one of the most popular products from the brand though, the launch of other powerful machines have finally made its sales to fall to zero.

Dirt Machine Custom Motorcycles, a full-scale bike workshop based in Indore has introduced something far intriguing. The customizers have transformed a Hero Karizma R into the KGF bike used by the superstar Yash in the movie KGF (Kolar Gold Fields). The movie features a modified Royal Enfield Himalayan while the customizers have offered the same design language to a Hero Karizma.

According to Dirt Machine Customs, the client approached them with a vision of modifying his Yamaha FZ to look like the bike seen in the movie KGF. Since he wanted a lighter and faster machine, the customizers suggested him to buy a used Hero Karizma R. The work done on the motorcycle gives it an exact KGF bike like look while the brand has christened it as “Demon”. Apart from the cosmetic changes, the ground clearance of the bike has also been improved to make it more suitable for the Indian roads.

Coming to the overall design language, the customizers have offered a scrambler styling to the motorcycle with Michelin Scrambler 4-18 tyres at either end. The complete matte black colour scheme adds to the exclusivity of the motorcycle while the contrast red graphics on the fuel tank further make it look exactly like the bike in the movie. The wheels used on the motorcycle are black powder-coated steel rims with 40 chrome-finish spokes.

Dirt Machine Customs has offered LED headlight set up at the front while the LED indicators at either end add to its sporty profile. The brand has also customized the rear swingarm as well as the rear part of the chassis. The exhaust system of the motorcycle has also been redesigned in addition to equipping the motorcycle with a comfortable single saddle.

Like the motorcycle featured in the KGF movie, the customizers have opted for a Royal Enfield Continental GT fuel tank for updating the Karizma R. The modifier has also upgraded the front suspension with USD forks while the rear of the bike features a monoshock suspension. The braking duties on the KGF bike are handled by disc brakes at either end with four-piston callipers.

Hero Karizma ZMR is showing no signs of a comeback as the sales report for March 2019 listed the same among the worst selling products with 0 units registered during the 31-day period. In comparison to the Karizma, Bajaj Pulsar 220F registered 6,724 units in the same month. Hero Karizma is awaiting the third generation update as the present model is designed on the lines of EBR styling.

The full-faired design looks more like a track-specific motorcycle from the front while the rear section proves as the weak point for the Karizma. The first generation model was great in terms of design. Here is the complete sales report for Hero Karizma ZMR since its relaunch in India.

Karizma ZMR Sales Report

  • May 2018 – 17 units
  • June 2018 – 12 units
  • July 2018 – 14 units

  • September 2018 – 11 units
  • October 2018 – 0 units
  • November 2018 – 4 units
  • December 2018 – 4 units
  • January 2019 – 4 units
  • February 2019 – 0 units
  • March 2019 – 0 units

Combined Sales (May-March): 76 units

Hero Karizma ZMR registered a total of just 76 units from the day it was relaunched in India. The engine still proves its worth with stress-free riding in all conditions. March 2019 was one of the worst months for Karizma as the sales number went down to zero.

Relaunching the same model of Karizma ZMR was the worst step from Hero MotoCorp and thus, they need to reconsider their strategy for selling a flagship model in India. Also, an average of 6-7 units per month is worst for India’s No.1 brand in terms of sales volume. The 3rd generation model of Karizma ZMR is expected to get Xtreme’s 200cc engine, as it is getting a good response from the buyers.

Hero Karizma ZMR Specs

  • Maximum Torque – 19.7 NM @ 6500 rpm

Hero Karizma ZMR got zero buyers in February 2019, hinting for the need of permanent discontinuation of the second generation motorcycle. Even the premium motorcycle segment registered a few units for individual products in the same month. Reintroduced with a BS4-compliant engine, Hero Karizma was expected to fetch numbers close to Honda CBR250R.

As Honda is also pushing their quarter-litre machine for no reason, it’s high time for brands to know that their products have aged well. The need for an upgrade is pretty visible in Karizma and CBR250R as both carry the same design as seen in their launch in 2014 and 2011 respectively.

The Karizma was a bestseller in its first generation design, notably for the R variant instead of the ZMR. Even the first generation R and ZMR happened to be the flagship performance products with Pulsar 220F on the closest edge and CBR250R on the upper side.

The influence of EBR design for the next-generation models proved fatal for the brand and left them struggling with 100-125cc commuters till date. Fortunately, Hero Xtreme 200R is gaining traction among rivals and with equal hope, Hero MotoCorp is almost ready with the new xPulse. The 200cc platform is not just affordable, but also equally challenging for the rivals.

Hero Karizma ZMR registered just 4 units in the month of January 2019. The brand once shocked everyone with the launch event for Karizma ZMR V2 in India, introducing the same old design that almost made fans cry after the discontinuation of the older design. It came back with INR 1.08 lakh for single and INR 1,10,500 for the dual tone shade. Here is a complete sales report for the Karizma ZMR for the last few months of its existence.

Hero Karizma ZMR Sales Report

  • May 2018 – 17 units
  • June 2018 – 12 units
  • July 2018 – 14 units
  • August 2018 – 10 units
  • September 2018 – 11 units
  • October 2018 – 0 units
  • November 2018 – 4 units
  • December 2018 – 4 units
  • January 2019 – 4 units
Combined Sales (May 2018 – Jan 2019): 76 units

The numbers are not even considered, taking into account that similarly priced bikes are good for five-digit sales number and Hero MotoCorp has more than 6000 touch points across the country. They have sold more than 80-million units, consisting mostly of commuter segment bikes like Splendor and Passion. Karizma was once the bestseller of its segment and now, the position is lost to Bajaj Pulsar 220F.

2018 Hero Karizma ZMR
Hero Karizma ZMR Dual-Tone Edition

Karizma is powered by a 223cc, single-cylinder engine, producing 20 BHP of maximum power at 8000 rpm and 19.7 Nm at 6500 rpm. The engine comes mated to a 5-speed gearbox. The model available now is equipped with oil-cooler and fuel injection as standard. They should have introduced the R variant alongside this ZMR, offering buyers with the same sort of power and a reduced price tag of around INR 90,000.

Hero Karizma ZMR Console

Karizma will witness a complete overhaul in the next two years, most probably bringing the bigger 300cc engine for direct competition to Apache RR 310. Also, most brands will move away from the existing segments as mandatory ABS rule will result in a further rise in effective pricing. Hero MotoCorp will focus on weight reduction and design enhancement, taking cues from the HX250R concept that never saw the daylight.

Hero Karizma proved itself on many parameters in the past and recent times saw its modified examples proving their worth in the world of custom motorcycles. One such was seen from Ballard Customs and this one brings the cafe racer tag to its personality. The Mumbai based modifier made this product as a hobby and then felt its potential of being an amazing machine for the custom bike lovers. The profile of a cafe racer was very neatly implemented on the Karizma.

The front gets a custom round headlight while its suspension and alloy wheels stay same as the stock version. The sporty fuel tank gets replaced with a custom Continental GT style fuel tank. Then comes a flat seat and its even smaller backrest, integrated inside the typical cafe racer rear end cowl. The indicators are integrated into the front suspension section while the motorcycle also gets bar end mirrors. Apart from these, the center section looks pretty empty due to the missing mudguard.

Hero Karizma R was discontinued in India last year. It was powered by a 223cc, single cylinder air cooled engine that is good for 19.2 BHP at 7500 rpm and 19.35 Nm at 6000 rpm. It was equipped with a 5-speed gearbox and claims a custom exhaust on this modified cafe racer version. Hero even offers a fuel injected version named ZMR for the same motorcycle and it is on-sale in India for INR 1.08 lakh (ex-showroom). For those who loved the engine of Hero Karizma and wished for a different body type, nothing can be better than this one made by Ballard Customs.

The first ever product of Aghori Customs, this motorcycle was once a Hero Honda Karizma and then slowly transformed into this dark themed street fighter. Karizma was first dismantled to its core, striping off the thicker body panels to achieve a lean look. The motorcycle is now finished in Grey and uses minimum body panels at all places. They have removed the front and rear fender to flaunt its thicker custom tyres on stock Karizma wheels.

The front headlight on the Karizma is replaced with a smaller round headlight while a street style handlebar is used to create an aggressive riding position on the motorcycle. The exposed air filter and custom Black exhaust would further help the motorcycle flaunt its improved performance. Aghori Customs have used a different fuel tank and improved its overall looks by adding Black dual racing stripes on the top of its fuel tank.

Hero-Karizma-Street-Fighter-5

Two perfectly made panels cover the space under the motorcycle’s seat. They have chopped the rear frame in order to get an attractive single seat machine out of the touring friendly Karizma. The front disc brake is kept at its place to get better braking on the motorcycle. Their first custom motorcycle is definitely lighter than the stock Karizma. It currently misses out on the instrument console and gets its number plate console on the left footrest.
