Growing Demand for Mahindra Thar Diesel 4x2

Growing Demand for Mahindra Thar Diesel 4x2

The popular Mahindra Thar SUV is facing an ongoing challenge – a surge in demand that consistently surpasses its supply. This issue has persisted for over a year, despite Mahindra's manufacturing plant operating at nearly full capacity. The most extended waiting period extends to a maximum of 15-16 months, particularly for the 4x2 variants of the Thar. This situation has remained largely unchanged since August 2023, when it was reported that Mahindra had an order backlog of over Rs 2.8 lakh SUVs, with 68,000 bookings for the Thar alone, accumulating an average of 10,000 new bookings each month.

Thar 4x2 Variants - The Long Wait

  • The Thar's diesel 4x2 variants are faced with the most extended waiting period, spanning 15-16 months for the two available trims. In contrast, the petrol 4x2 variants have a considerably shorter waiting period, averaging around five months. The Thar 4x2 is exclusively available with a hardtop.
  • The Thar 4x2 is powered by a 1.5-litre diesel engine that produces 118hp and 300Nm of torque, with only a 6-speed manual gearbox option. The petrol variant features a 2.0-litre mStallion engine borrowed from the Thar 4x4, delivering 152hp and 300Nm of torque, mated to a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox.
  • Prices for the Thar 4x2 range between Rs 10.98 lakh and Rs 13.77 lakh, which is notably lower than the 4x4 models due to a lower tax classification as sub-4m vehicles, contributing to higher demand.

Thar 4x4 Variants - Not So Short Wait

  • Thar 4x4 variants, whether diesel or petrol, with either hardtop or soft-top options, command an average waiting period of 5-6 months. In comparison to earlier data, this reflects an increase of around two months.
  • The Thar 4x4 is available with two engine options: the 2.0-litre petrol mStallion mentioned earlier and a 2.2-litre diesel engine, producing 132hp and 300Nm of torque. Unlike the 4x2 variants, the 4x4 Thars come with options for both 6-speed manual and automatic gearboxes. Some models of the Thar 4x4 also feature a manual-shift 4x4 transfer case, and certain variants include a manual-locking differential.
  • Prices for the Thar 4x4 currently range between Rs 14.04 lakh and Rs 16.27 lakh for the petrol models, while the diesel variants are priced between Rs 14.60 lakh and Rs 16.94 lakh (all prices are ex-showroom, Delhi).

In simple terms, if you are eager to own a Mahindra Thar, especially the diesel 4x2 version, you must be prepared to be patient. The wait time is proof of the vehicle's huge popularity and the challenges suppliers face in satisfying such high demand.
